Mayor Betsy Hodges takes heat for tweet following North Mpls triple shooting

Betsy_Hodges_2014.jpg
Every morning, Betsy Hodges tweets an inspirational quote. She does this so regularly that MPR recently used the day-to-day times of Hodges's "quote" tweets to track her sleep cycle.

Most of the time, her tweets come and go without anybody batting an eye. But yesterday, as Minneapolis woke up to news of yet another shooting on the North Side, the mayor generated some heat with a tweet some thought was flippant.

Here's what she said:

And here were some of the responses, which channeled the criticism North Side Council Member Barb Johnson had for city officials recently, albeit in a more gruff manner:

There's more where that came from. Read all the Twitter responses here. Hodges also took heat for her tweet on the never dull North Vent Facebook page.

On her own Facebook page, Hodges indirectly responded to the criticism by outlining her strategy for dealing with North Side public safety issues. Click to page two to read what she said.

Oh. It does come off a bit odd though, in my opinion. Thanks!

she cant, you can only use so many letters in a tweet.

Because you have to get creative to fit a whole quote in 120 characters.

Yeah all those cops and politicians knew this was going down. Anything to get their faces on TV.

People are really missing the point here. The quote tweet isn't what matters, it's the lack of response from the office on the shooting.

You all DO know that most musicians, bands, actors, businesses, popular politicians, etc have a team of social media people working for them, right? Also, there are platforms for PRE-SCHEDULING many of those posts. Facebook and Twitter have a few different ways to do this. Pretty sure her morning posts are scheduled. Nevermind the fact that SHE IS ALSO A HUMAN BEING.

Agree with her politics or not... Just get a grip. She didn't kill anyone and she's not here to save the planet and create a Utopian society. She's here to guide us ALL in running the city (hi, democracy). We are just as to blame for the violence as anyone else. Get off your f-ing Twitter accounts yourselves and go volunteer at a crisis center or go mentor a neglected child so they don't end up resorting to violence in the future. How is complaining to her about it helping???

She can't do it alone. Damn. An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of bitching about it after the fact.

The problem, Stephan, is that she is completely vacant from the Northside and this is hardly the first time she has behaved questionably after a Northside tragedy. For example there was NOTHING from the mayors office when a man was murdered in a home invasion a few months ago. Back when we had a mayor who gave a rip that tragedy would have received a lot more attention. North is getting out of control and she is in charge of this city and its safety.

Yep, that one tweet literally killed those people.

I'm elated she's catching heat over her lack of involvement in the Northside. How many people need to die before our elected officials provide some sort of realistic plan to curb the violence in my neighborhood?

Wait a minute! You mean to tell me that she took a moment away from trying to solve a deeply entrenched set of problems which have stymied the city for decades? Doesn't she understand that she's not supposed to do anything else until violence, poverty and inequality are swept from the land? I bet she even had breakfast this morning, and may have lunch plans too. The nerve! I suggest paying attention to how she is actually addressing issues rather than claiming that a tweeted quote is the sum total of her response to the day's developments.

She is not in grade school nor is she tweeting to grade schoolers so why is she spelling like one? Shockingly embarrassing and indicative of her amateurish grasp of the position of mayor.

Mpls. elects some of the most unqualified and out and  out dumb people and than are surprised when they do stupid things. And Barb Johnson is the leader of the Clueless Crew, she blamed the judges for not putting them away long enough. Clueless, there is no room, you idiots spent all the money on stadiums and not enough of jails.

I believe the Mayor is floating around somewhere in the upper reaches of the earth's ionosphere with Great Big Smile...  waving back at North Minneapolis!

Also, Twitter only allows you 140 characters! Hence the abbreviated language.

... some of these comments are hilarious. "Glamorization of thug life" comparing a shooting in a major metro area to immigration, she should "resign" over this, etc. Who cares?! Honestly, we have an incredibly low murder rate in this city. Go to DC, Chicago, NYC... Just shut up and appreciate you live in a state that is so safe...

I wonder if/how that quote was supposed to relate to the shooting. If you have built castles in the air ... they are exactly where they should be. Very Buddhist. And she does need to stop using that abbreviated text language.

Maybe she has her inspirational tweets scheduled? Many politicians/companies/famous peeps do that. She could have then forgot it might not be appropriate for the news that day.

People wanna complain about her but just voted her in... umm ok why did u elect her then? People are gonna shoot regardless of who is in office. As long as the 2nd amendment exists there will always be shootings, duh! Hodges has nothing to do with the constitution or people exercising it. Do people actually think if someone else was in office there would be no shootings? Come on, this issue is much bigger than the Mayor, this is a nationwide problem which will not cease until we ban guns like many other countries already have.

So Hodges is tweeting while North Mpls burns. Sounds like Obama playing pool and fund raising while what seems like half the children of Central America are illegally crossing our border

Quotes are meant to inspire us - to reach for something more.  This takes her daily quote completely out of context.  Did she know when she set up her daily quotes that these tragic shootings would occur?  Should we judge her overall performance on this one quote?   I think the negative comments are blowing this whole quote out of proportion...  it saddens me that people are so quick to judge.  Can we all try to look for meaning in her words on a more broad scope?

@stephansonprop there are more than enough jails, unfortunately they are chock full of relatively harmless people put away for petty drug possession. Free them and there's space for real criminals

Pace yourself, shooter. The White House is gonna have a black guy in it for 2 1/2 more years yet. Remember, the central American children are just a false flag for Beng... umm, there's IR-no, that's been shot down... wait! SoggyRiceKrispieGate! You can maybe pin that on him!

Should she pick up a rifle and start patrolling the streets tonight? Just like Obama should join a border militia. These are systemic problems that have come about from the actions of many people, not simply the inaction of one. But hey if you don't like that person it sure is convenient to blame them for it
