Mpls man removed from flight after he disses gate agent by name on Twitter

Watson (left), a formerly loyal Southwest customer, says he's done with the airline as a result of how he was treated.
Just after 5 p.m. Sunday, Southwest Airlines "A-Lister" Duff Watson tried to use his status to priority board his flight back home to Minneapolis with his two young children. He says he's done this in the past and it hasn't been an issue.

But in the case, the gate agent, a woman named "Kimberly S," told him he'd have to wait. Watson tells us he was "literally taken aback, because I travel a lot with my kids and have done that before," but his next thought was, "Oh well."

But Kimberly's response escalated the situation, at least according to Watson's version of events.

When he informed her he'd been allowed to board early with his kids on previous Southwest flights, "Her response was, 'Well, we can stand here and argue all day, but I gotta board A passengers,'" Watson says.

An email Watson subsequently sent to Southwest explains what he says happened next:
She called for the B group, and we approached the podium and she collected our boarding cards, and as I am about to walk down the jet way ramp, I ask what her name is. (I could read her first name on her badge already. Could not make out the spelling of her last name.) She told me that she didn't have to give out her last name, and I said in effect, "No problem, I'll be sure to tweet about your rude attitude anyway," and something along the lines of, "nice way to treat A-list."
Though he threatened to put Kimberly on blast on Twitter, Watson tells us at no time did he swear at her or act inappropriately.

In any event, with those unpleasantries in the past, Watson and his kids boarded the plane, where, as promised, he tweeted about Kimberly. Though he later deleted it -- we'll get to why in a second -- somebody later got in touch with him and sent a screengrab showing another tweet that quoted him:

watsontweet.jpg
Watson's tweet, which is here quoted by @AmConCon: "RUDEST agent in Denver, Kimberly S, gate C39, not happy @swa..."

Before the plane moved anywhere, Watson was summoned off of it. Another excerpt from his email explains what happened next:
I gather my two kids and our three carry-ons from under the seat and the small suitcase we had as a carry-on in the overhead bin and make our way to just outside the aircraft door. Kimberly S. was there, and in a terse voice told me that "her safety was threatened since I asked for her last name."

She then stated something to the effect that she was "going to call the police" and that I had no right to use her name in social media.

Call the police? Are you kidding? At this point my kids both started to cry. My daughter asked if we were going to jail.
Adding to the absurdity, in a separate tweet published an hour earlier, Watson praised Southwest.

Oh, my fucking god. This guy really has to get over himself. He expects preferential treatment because someone was nice to him before? And he expects others to wait because he decided to have kids?

Fuck this guy.

I think Kimberly should be reprimanded for threatening a customer by calling the police to hassle them. Airport staff have awful hours, pay, and benefits--but with service like this I think some (and definately not all, or even most) deserve exactly that.

This guy needs to take a Valium and lighten up. SWA is by far the best airlines and I an A-List Companion Pass.

My assessment of these comments is that the average shittypages reader does not know what it is like to have to fly on a regular basis. By regular I mean every week for meetings, not once a year for spring break.

Agent was well out of order. Airlines should respect frequent flyers who keep them in gainful employment. That said southwest are a scuzzy bunch at best.

She abused her power when she told TSA she was threatened when he asked for her last name. Rude or not she works in customer service she should be used to it, not saying he was right because he wasn't but to call TSA because he asked for her last name is B.S.

As a Southwest FREQUENT traveler, professionalism coach, and general big thinker, I am left to wonder: Is this what we've worked towards as an innovative society? Posting "news" about some entitled dork who chose to overlook the fact that "A-List" and priority boarding on Southwest are a relative JOKE because of the lack of seating assignments? Wait your turn, dude - you're no more special than the passenger with C15 on their ticket. Also Kimberly needs to attend professionalism classes without compensation for hours of work lost.

He should be able to board with his kids first, why not? She didn't need to make such a big deal about it either !!! He was wrong about the whole tweet deal I have to agree, however , we pay a lot for airline ticket and the services are horrible , the agents are rude, and they do whatever they want and at many times, we customers are left out with no choices

am I the only one who thinks this guy was treated really terribly by an airline that had given him "a list" status. I'm not familiar with this separate boarding status but I'm assuming it's something he either pays more for, or has earned for flying so frequently. I feel like sw is talking out of both sides of their mouth showing "appreciation" for their customers then arguing with them and ultimately kicking him off a plane for being upset with the gate lady. My first job was in customer service and I learned how to treat customers well, and even how to deal with the worst, most terrible customer ever. If I were the gate lady I would have handled this 100% differently.

Whaaaat an asshole! I despise people with self-entitled attitudes like his! In this day and age if you're trying to find out someone's last name, it's to find dirt on them online. Great dad, dad. Great dad.

Everybody who is posting negative, disrespectful and idiotic responses needs to rethink what kind of people they are. Have a little sympathy and humanity. Ridiculous example of how some adults are less mature than toddlers.

I think it's fantastic that we can now use social media to call out poor customer service. The way this woman treated this man and his children is despicable.

What a prick! You're no A-lister dude, especially now. No matter how upset you are over something with an airline or flight or anything really at the airport, don't tweet about it! And they should not have to apologize to him considering there's probably more to the story and he probably was very hostile. Duff Watson, you sir are a jackass.

We haven't even heard CWA or witness accounts, but his own version makes it sound like it wasn't just about twitter. He started an argument with an agent attempting to board a planeful of people. Then he makes it personal toward her, demanding her last name and threatening to tweet about it. Then he starts another argument with an employee as soon as he enters the plane. The company had a right to remove him from the plane, question him, then allow him and his family to continue their flight.

United Airlines reports it will lay off 600+ well paid gate agents to be replaced by $9/hr part time employees. We will see more of this idiocracy in the future. Get ready Alisters, you aren't special to the part timers and underpaid who don't care that you paid to be special.

This is why selective special treatment sucks. It makes the folks who ARE trying to follow the rules or who might be new or don't know who to bend the rules for, out to be some sort of party pooper or fun police. Like if you go to a bar and one bartender sometimes gives you a free shot or $2 beer.....if a different bartender doesn't bend the rules for you, you DON'T get to complain! Especially if you already KNOW that they were giving you special treatment. You STFU and pay full price knowing that your special treatment can be cut off at ANY time

I don't agree with the guy and his actions, but SWA's flight attendant isn't in the right either. This is a case of two bone heads trying to abuse both their power and status.

While I agree that he seems like an over-entitled twit, SWA should not have pulled him from the plane simply because he said on Twitter that he thinks the gate agent was rude. He has a right to use social media as he sees fit, as long as it's legal, non-threatening speech. There is no contract in a ticket that requires that you like your airline or all of its employees. Plenty of blame to go around here.
