Archbishop John Nienstedt refuses to step down despite mounting pressure

Scene from a deposition
Archbishop John Nienstedt is digging his heels in the ground.

Despite growing evidence that he downplayed or ignored signs of sexual abuse within the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, he's decided not to resign from his post. Instead, he promised Wednesday to lead the region's Catholics to "a new and better day."

In a column for the Catholic Spirit, he explained:
I am devoted to serving this local Church, and I will continue to do so and to apply these hard lessons that I have learned over the past months. While it may be difficult to believe, the suffering we have endured is bearing much fruit in reform of practices and correction of decisions that were made in the past, either by me or my predecessors.
It comes in response to the editorial board of the Star Tribune and a Pioneer Press columnist calling for the archbishop's resignation (and the New York Times shaming him globally). Hundreds of pages of internal documents have been released in the last year putting Nienstedt at the center of the scandal, some of which contradict official statements he'd previously made to the press.

"His credibility is in tatters," the Strib wrote. "The archdiocese needs a different leader -- a reformer -- to have a reasonable chance of restoring its damaged reputation and sustaining its service to the community."

But bishops rarely step down of their own volition. They're appointed by the pope and they fall by the pope, which is why the writers in New York urged Francis to take a harder look at the Twin Cities. Nienstedt knows this.

And he also knows not to say too much. A jury trial begins September 22 in which Jeff Anderson's lawfirm will argue that the church has been negligent in its handling of sexual abuse claims for many years. Read Nienstedt's statement in its entirety and you won't find a single reference to a priest or victim. Yes, the archbishop takes responsibility -- but for what?

Rather, he apologized for "the distractions I inadvertently caused," said he was "too trusting" of the internal review process, and called the last 10 months of his life a "learning curve." He was quick to talk about a new team -- made up of priests, laymen and non-Catholics -- to help assist him as well as a new victim's liaison.

He spent part of Wednesday giving interviews to select reporters. He didn't tap anyone from this paper, but the archdiocese communication department says we're on the waiting list.

Archbishop, sir, if you're serious about reform and you value the opinions of your critics, then give us a call.

High Highly Revered Holiness should be in jail and heavily sodomized by the same felons he sheltered.

I love how this ilk seems to think they are above the law!  Church, smirch....hiding behind the pulpit makes me sick.  No wonder why Christianity is on the decline in the world!  Look towards Rome!!

"Nienstedt acknowledged failing to inform police about complaints of sexual misbehavior by priests." He didn't do what he was supposedly 'called' to do, to protect and serve. He let people get away with doing things that weren't right and as such, should -at least- step down. Instead, he's shuffled people around and hid THEM from the lime-light. Sure, that doesn't mean he should be forcibly barred in prison, but he should face what he's done, at least. That quote is from the Star Tribune, by the way.

If he is guilty I yes would love to see him rot. I thought that was implied. Hence the feeling of being torn. I guess my sarcastic, non anal retentive side didn't show through to the uptight, pessimistic, more over anal retentive man on the other end of that keyboard. Not every thing has to be written or said so seriously. Especially when it comes to such a serious matter. I take light to things as a means to lighten moods and a way to process in my own head the feeling it gives me as a mother.

Your well though out, thorough and eloquent response clearly outlying all of your points behind your position in a logical and easy to follow manner has swayed me to your side on this argument. You sir are both a Gentleman and a Scholar (is what I would have said if your comment wasn't so moronic).

Jeremy Deysach

Why do you want to see him rot if he isn't guilty?

Jillian Stocke
Jillian Stocke

Oh gosh I'm torn. I want to see him rot, but I can't say if he is 100% guilty. So can't we all just follow "not guilty until proven guilty" I hate the hopeful side of me that's says...I hope he didn't really do this....he is a archbishop for Christ sake!

Because it's not illegal if you're a priest, a cop, or a legislator in Merica. #Duh.

(And Allison, it is only illegal if you are a mandated reporter - know the law before you try to quote it)

Again, where is the trial and conviction? You can't just lock people up because you don't like something.

Archbishop Nienstedt is a  pedophile protecting, gay hating, gay bishop, who won't step down, after brutally defying Jesus in Matt 18:6, and bearing false witness every chance he could.

In other words, he’s the perfect Catholic bishop, just like all the others, in satan's Catholic church, lowering the bar of Christianity to indefensible lows.

We have heard over and over and over how NOW everything is ALL BETTER.

It's NEVER gotten better, and liars and hypocrites like Nienstedt is part of WHY.

Nienstedt looks to be just one more of those who preys on the vulnerable, not just 'at them'.  I believe the accusations against him, both of his own direct misconduct and the misconduct of covering for other predator priests.

He has to go -- preferably to somewhere humble and impoverished, so he can atone somewhere off his purple cushioned behind.

What charges has he had fair trial on and been convicted of? I agree that if he is tried and convicted of a crime then he should be, but what exactly has he been tried and convicted of that makes you say what you said?

Wow a whole minutes before a moron chimes in with the "Mounting Pressure" joke. Way to be original, dummy.

This line stuck out to me: "...the suffering we have endured...". This pedophile enabler actually thinks he and the catholic church are the victims! Rarely in human history has anyone shown such ignorance and selfishness. This man is pure evil incarnate!

Anyone who still goes to a catholic church and provides donations is a pedophile enabler. Pure and simple. There is no other explanation why anyone would still want to be a catholic, other than they're a closet pedophile.

The catholic church is evil on earth.

'John Nienstedt had a great fall.
All the king's words & advisers and all the king's men
Couldn't put John Nienstedt together again'

To strengthen the area's catholic churches, don't put him on the wall again.

"a new team ........ to help assist him as well as a new victim's liaison" appears to be putting a fox back in the chicken coop.

It's amazing there are people that think Nienstedt should keep his job.  When you work screw up means you made it easier for pedophiles to molest kids I think you deserve to be fired.  Call me crazy but Nienstedt might be one of the biggest fuck ups in the history of the world at his job.  What an arrogant evil stupid asshole he is to no resign.   The hubris.

Latest news in the real daily newspaper is that His Most Reverend High Holiness hired a retired cop and toady to take care of things.

If you want to give money, give it to one of the miserable homeless with signs. 99 percent of the time the money goes for food. The High Holiness RCC would tell you that they squander it on booze.

In reality and truth, they "squander " their begging money on FOOD.

I want to hear where they jammed him into prison where he is sodomized frequently.
