Earlier this year, HBO's Bill Maher launched a new website known as "Flip A District," where viewers could ponder the worst U.S. representative. The hope was that bad publicity would oust one poor bastard from power in the next election.

For months, the votes poured in through Twitter, and on Friday, Maher announced the first pol to make it to the final four bracket: John Kline of Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District.

What's the problem? Well, for starters, the retired Marine colonel from Lakeville helped shut down the government last year in an attempt to delay ObamaCare.

He also opposed the Student Loan Forgiveness Act and wrote a bill to reduce the budget deficit by raising Stafford loan interest rates by 2.5 percent. Which moved Kyle McCarthy, the co-founder of StudentDebtCrisis.org, to nominate Kline on HuffPo. He called out the six-term congressman for taking campaign money from for-profit colleges with low graduation numbers and high student loan default rates.

Maher, however, has gone after Kline for more than education. On his website, he characterizes the congressman this way (partly because of his support of the Keystone XL Pipeline and charter schools, and rejection of increased coal mine regulation):

He's an anti-environment, anti-union, anti-mine safety, pro-war party hack who bragged about shutting down the government and once proposed legislation to replace Ulysses S. Grant on the $50 bill with Ronald Reagan.

We asked Kline for an interview on Sunday, but never heard back. We'll update this post if we do.

In the meantime, here's the clip from Friday's Real Time with Bill Maher:

John Kline also made Creepy Magazine's Annual Creepy Smile List 2014.  He was 2nd after Mitch McConnell.
