Republican House candidate Bob Frey shares bizarre, discredited view about gay sex

:::: UPDATE :::: We got in touch with Matt Gieseke, the endorsed DFLer running against Frey and Nash, to get his response to Frey's comments. Click to page two to read it.

Last year, video of pastor Mike Frey's cringe-worthy soliloquy at the Capitol about the dangers of "ejaculation inside of a colon" left us unsure whether to laugh, cry, or move into the woods and stop paying attention to politics altogether.

Like son, like father, apparently. Even after Mike embarrassed himself by espousing an anti-gay theory that has no scientific basis, his father, Bob, articulated basically the same view during a recent interview with MinnPost.

The elder Frey, a businessman in Norwood Young America, is running for the Minnesota House. He faces a GOP primary in August against Jim Nash, the current mayor of Waconia. Both are running to replace retiring Rep. Ernie Leidiger (R-Mayer), who once blamed Obama for the $100,000 in taxes he owed.

MinnPost notes that "sodomy" has become one of the campaign's central issues, and when reporter Cyndy Brucato asked Frey about his position on "social issues," he offered up the following reply.

"[It] does certainly need to be addressed for what it is," he said. "It's not about the gay agenda but about the science and the financial impact of that agenda. It's more about sodomy than about pigeonholing a lifestyle."

He then offered up this theory about why gay (man) sex is more pernicious than good old-fashioned hetero copulation:

"When you have egg and sperm that meet in conception, there's an enzyme in the front that burns through the egg. The enzyme burns through so the DNA can enter the egg. If the sperm is deposited anally, it's the enzyme that causes the immune system to fail. That's why the term is AIDS -- acquired immunodeficiency syndrome."
"It's about sodomy," Frey continued. "It's huge amounts of money. AIDS is a long-term illness, causing pain, suffering, death, a long-term illness that's very expensive to treat."

Given his theory's lack of scientific basis, you won't be surprised to learn Frey didn't cite a source for his claims, at least as far as we can tell from the MinnPost report. (Frey and Nash didn't respond to our emails seeking comment.)

Earlier this year, the Bluestem Prairie political blog, citing an unnamed source, reported that Frey, who serves as campaign committee chair for similarly gay-unfriendly Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen (R-Glencoe), recently distributed a DVD in his district claiming "that the anti-bullying bill now being considered by the Minnesota legislature is part of a plot by elites to infect school children with AIDS so that doctors and drug companies can profit from their suffering," as Sally Jo Sorensen writes.

Other than that conspiratorial lunacy, we're sure he's a perfectly reasonable dude.

Gieseke's transparent attempt to smear Mayor Nash by association is patently dishonest.

Jim Nash is the viable, sane alternative to fringe candidate Frey. While Frey is obsessed with gay sex and dinosaurs, Jim Nash is committed to economic growth and Constitutional freedoms.

If Gieseke wants to ensure that Frey doesn't get elected in this solidly Republican district, he should start door-knocking for Jim Nash now.

I can't believe these idiots are in our political offices & leading faith communities - opinions don't make facts!! Even worse, who has elected them (probably the ones listening to them preach their opinions I suppose) and what happened to the people's ability to think??? Whatever your opinion, don't just jump on the bandwagon or you'll look as ignorant, uneducated & just plain silly as these boys

I wish Gieseke would run for Governor.  He seems like a reasonable person!

This guy wants to make laws. I can't even begin to fathom why someone like him is ever even considered for an endorsement when they say things like this. Everyone is allowed a stupid statement or two, because everyone is bound to make one. However, statements like this prove he has no idea how sex works. And he wants to legislate. He wants to make laws. I can't even process this.

Another election, another mentally ill bigot representing Republicans.  People like this are what happens when you have a base made up of bigot idiots.  Vote DFL.   What a joke this is what passes for a candidate among Republicans.
