Both sides of open carry debate see Target announcement as victory

Target interim CEO John Mulligan announced Tuesday that the Minneapolis-based retail giant will "respectfully request that guests not bring firearms" inside stores. Although weapons are "at odds with the family-friendly shopping," the company would continue to oblige by local laws that allow open carry.

Both sides of the chalked it up as a victory.

Gun permit holders can legally carry rifles in Minnesota Target stores

For instance, the Texas-based Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America received Target's decision with applause. For weeks now it's been pressuring the retailer to follow the example of Chipotle and other restaurants in opposing guns on their property.

Shannon Watts, founder of the advocacy group, which reportedly takes money from billionaire Michael Bloomberg, wrote in a statement that "Target recognized that moms are a powerful customer base and political force -- and you can respect the 2nd Amendment and the safety of customers at the same time."

But a request is a request. Target did not actually ban guns within its stores, as some headlines have declared, even though it could have. In an interview with the Star Tribune, a company spokeswoman could not have been more clear: "There is no prohibition." There won't even be signs.

The Minnesota Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance painted its Facebook wall with #WINNING. Its president thanked Target for refusing "to give into Bloomberg's demands," but also saw the decision for what it is: a "non-policy."

Indeed, the real winner here is Target and it's PR machine (and possibly this Twitter hashtag). The retailer got dragged into this mess when a group of gun lovers showed up last month at a store in Texas brandishing assault rifles.

One of the smartest reactions of the day came from a commenter on the alliance Facebook page who noted that both gun lovers and haters go shopping. What Mulligan is really trying to say is simple: "leave us out of your fight."

Carrying a rifle into Target is like the idiots in the #Occupy movement. Both are being irresponsible.

Now this is the first time I have seen the opposition say something thoughtful and insightful. Well done! Respect people even if you disagree.

I will be the guy laughing so hard I'll be crying! I'll also be laughing directly in the gun nuts face! You can always offset stupidity with humor! Throw in a little ridicule to boot.

Target and its PR team are a joke. They ask that guests (whatever they are) refrain from bringing guns into their stores? But they'll obey local laws? OK. Obey local laws by posting a sign prohibiting guns in the freaking stores. Who wrote this ridiculous statement? Some debutante from Texas who has never actually worked a day in her life? What a stupid company with a pathetic PR team.

Honestly... I am a bit worried that idiot will strike out at Target.... Let's all just hope, pray, meditate on the idea of that NOT happening.... I don't want to go through a scanner for shopping too.

It's not just target it's everywhere, my question is this how do you tell the psychos from the nut jobs when they look the same. The other issue I see is how long till people stop paying attention Because they see it all the damn time.

I agree with Rob. If I was in Target and saw someone with a gun, I would drop my stuff and walk out of the store.

When will the first accidently shooting death be in a Target?

Do you really NEED to bring an assault rifle to Target?? What in the sweet f#%k is wrong with some people? If I saw that, I would leave my cart right where it is & go to another store. I respect the 2nd amendment & enjoy shooting every so often, but these folks must bored, or very insecure. I wish them the best & hope they get the help they need.

I think carrying around aks in public creates and promotes fear in more ways than one. These people are paranoid if they think that they need to constantly carry around a gun to feel safe. Your chances of being a random of victim of crime are fairly low, stop trying to make people think that they are constanly in danger.

The more we talk about it, the more we give crazies ideas! When will people start using logic?

But more and more often, intelligent consumers will prefer stores which do not allow #guns and may even #boycott stores which allow guns-- such as #Target. Personally have been avoiding Target anyway because of the credit-breach. #OpenCarry

Do any of you realize you come across someone carrying a gun basically daily? Conceal and carry is wonderful. I am all for guns (come from a huge hunting background) But walking around with shot guns and rifles to make a statement is ridiculous! Scares the shit out of people (mainly children then women) which is so wrong. I absolutely understand both sides of the argument........ But given my up bringing I am all for fire arms!

Fine. We have something called "Open Carry". Actually doing it as some kind of statement marks you as a half-wit.

What is wrong with all of you?!? It is necessary to have a loaded AK-47 when buying toilet paper!!! Especially when a birthday card is needed! A Bazooka will help me feel safe lol Ill never understand those people.

Great comments! I got beat up on FB yesterday for celebrating this victory. I just needed to hear Target say, not in our stores! The "people" who supported me were women. The "people" who beat me up were men. I think women feel differently about this..... They don't want a shoot out at the OK Corral while shopping with their kids. There are plenty of "arms" in the Sporting Goods department.... A bat, a golf club? The kid who recently took down the kid in the latest and saddest school killing, took the shooter down without being "armed".... I'm happy. I don't think Target wanted the riff raff and pandered to the NRA a bit, but they took a stand!

Hopefully these asshats will stop being asshats now.

Public displays like this only does ONE thing, and that's  to stir up grassroots support for the opposition.  NOBODY is going to look at a bunch of civilians carrying rifles in a department store and think, "Oh yeah, that's reasonable.  Let's change the law to support that."

Stop kicking the fucking hornets nest.

As a gun owner, many on the extreme are ruining it for everyone. Stop bullying people and pretending rights mean confrontation.

Even during the height of deer hunting season, we would never, ever, bring our rifles into a store or other public place. It was considered disrespectful, dangerous, and just plain old stupid. We left them in our vehicles unloaded in a case. Our firearms safety instructors drilled that into our heads. And those instructors were all NRA trained and certified. I cannot imagine my instructors being pleased with how these "people" are behaving. I'd also be curious to know if their instructors told them this was just fine and dandy.

Why why why do these people with these big ass guns refuse to see that people are afraid of them? ORDINARY PEOPLE, not criminals. The criminals in Target are shoplifters.....are they planning to defend Target against shoplifters ?

Are you kidding?  Target released the most neutral statement they possibly could in hopes of putting this off onto the next retailer.

They did nothing.  I mean... they did it brilliantly, but did nothing nonetheless.
