A helicopter hovers over the Minneapolis Federal Reserve building last night.
:::: UPDATE :::: MPD apologizes for helicopters; night two of military training features loud, unlit choppers

Last night, people in Minneapolis and St. Paul were surprised and scared to see and hear helicopters flying at low altitudes above them.

Folks took to the interwebs to wonder, what the hell is going on? The intrigue was especially thick because local authorities had given no advance warning about whatever was taking place.

First off, here are some clips of the scene above downtown Minneapolis:

And here's the blow-by-blow of how Pioneer Press night reporter Tad Vezner figured out what in God's name was going on: The timing of the Homeland Security-local law enforcement drills couldn't have been much worse in light of the questions Michael Brown's shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, has raised about the militarization of American police forces.

I grew up in New Mexico where the skies were routinely graced with a variety of aircraft conducting maneuvers in hopes of keeping us safe in case of the real deal. My reaction to those helicopters was quite different than most of the posts I am reading. Stop the paranoia and be thankful. Watch the beauty and precision of the pilot's work and have some faith that maybe, just maybe someone is acting in your behalf..

You know it bud. Prepare to fight. People who think the government is incapable of this are naive. This has happened in many country's before. Have we forgot Vietnam? Have we forgot Nazi Germany? Have we forgot the Soviet Union?

Why is everyone so surprised? This happened last summer too. I was riding my bike near the Hennepin Ave. bridge when the helicopters came out of the northeast and were circling the buildings downtown. I wish Obama really was the socialist dictator that all these crazies on the right claim - and the helicopters were coming to round these assholes up - and take their guns!

Remember when men in uniform were respected and datable. Now you have to warn your daughters to stay away. far far away. they are socio psychopaths.

Shawn Laughton, they were armed. I saw 2 guys on the side of the helicopter, as it flew by too close to my building, and they were holding something that looked like rifles. It was scary and every time they would fly by, I was just waiting for them to hit something.

It sounded like world war 2 era fighter planes about to bomb my neighborhood. Surreal....

They're not armed first of all. Lol second it's a training exercise.

I know people who drive to Mankato to watch the Vikings practice. That to me is quite a bit more bizarre than people being concerned about armed helicopters swarming our city.

I heard about it earlier in the day on the radio, maybe the day before.

It was really creepy. They were so close to my apartment downtown St. Paul near farmers market, our windows were buzzing and I felt I could reach out and grab one!

I was at the Twins game and they were buzzing around the whole time, flying really low and close to buildings.

Agreed. Super annoying. We live downtown. They were buzzing very close to our house and we had 0 prior knowledge.

Lol the NFL practices it's plays and no one cares. The military practices it's place and everyone looses their minds...

It's called desensitization, a commonly used psychological tactic, getting the people used to being subjected to militarization on our streets. We do not have civil liberty any longer, and Obama and those who support him talk the talk to appease people but have never walked the walk. This is all planned.

This used to be illegal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_Comitatus_Act - But now because we need to be safe from the non-existant bogey-man (aka al CIA-da) these kind of "drills" are happening every where.  You are damn right we live in a east-German style police state.  Police now are trained to be soldiers, not to protect and serve.  Ask anyone going to a police school, its all military training now. Just look at ferguson... Last night they were assulting and arresting the press just like that was a normal thing in our country... Fuck you pigs!

@josh019  You should Google " ATP 3-39.33 "Civil Disturbances."  That's the Army's training manual on all the exceptions to Posse Comitatus.  Basically it says the military can be used on US soil against US citizens if there is enough civil disturbance that the government of a state requests it. Or if there's enough civil disturbance that the government of a state doesn't request it.  Or if "federal military commanders" deem it necessary.

But other than that, yeah, strictly forbidden.

@digitalprotocol @MNjoe If it really WAS the guys in the black helicopters coming for your guns - you wouldn't last 5 min. (Remember, this really isn't happening - it's all in your mind.)

@9thnhennepin first of all, that sounds super boring (take it from me as I’m living it) and secondly, I don’t have tinder!
