Man threatens to jump from I-394 bridge; ultimately talked off ledge by officers

Passersby took photos and video of the man as he hung over I-394 this morning.
This morning, traffic between downtown Minneapolis and the western suburbs was at a standstill as an apparently suicidal man threatened to jump from the Penn Avenue bridge over I-394.

The first reports of the incident trickled in around 6 a.m. Lanes in both directions weren't totally reopened for about three and a half hours.

Thankfully, the man didn't jump and was eventually taken into custody.

We touched base with Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder seeking more information. He sent us this statement:
This morning just before 6:00, Minneapolis Police responded to a crisis situation on Penn Ave and Interstate 394.

Upon officer's arrival, it was evident that, for public safety reasons, Interstate 394 westbound and the HOV lanes would need to be closed. This is never a decision made lightly. We quickly consulted with the Minnesota State Patrol who concurred and assisted in this task, along with the Metro Transit Police.

Officers on site handled the situation with great professionalism and compassion. They were able to bring this event to a positive conclusion. We are pleased to announce that no one was hurt.

The roadway was opened up as soon as possible. This was also publicized by the MPD_PIO Twitter account along with a phone call placed to each of the major media outlets so they could get the word out.

We thank the public for their patience and understanding in this situation.
We asked Elder whether the man involved was arrested for trespassing or some other offense. He said he didn't immediately know, but would get back to us with more information. We'll update this post when we hear back.

Note -- An earlier version of this post contained video clip of the man. We've removed the footage at the request of Canvas Health Crisis Connection.

Say "Hello!" to suicide prevention by wearing a Doubtfire Face and donate: http://afsp.donordrive.com/campaign/doubtfireface In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 13.7 minutes claiming more than 38,000 lives each year (AFSP, 2014). In order to spread awareness for suicide prevention, we honor the late Robin Williams with the iconic #DoubtfireFace. We encourage everyone to submit a video and say “HELLLLOOO” to suicide prevention. *

Charge him with a crime, and the fees for the response. In a society, if everyone was allowed to get away with things like this it would be chaos. People should not use the police department and fire department as means of therapy.

Thank God the Authoritarian strain of Conservatism hasn't gained too strong a foothold here in Minnesota, yet. Their concern is with expediency and order. The inconvenience to commuters from our wealthy western suburbs would have been the primary concern so getting this guy down as quickly as possible, by whatever means necessary, would have been priority #1. Our latest example of Authoritarianism run amok is what happen recently in St. Louis, but there are many many more.

Exactly, I'm not arguing this was a cry for help. I'm thankful he didn't jump. City pages erased the posts I was replying to. The people complaining about their commute being interrupted. Some of you probably didn't see those posts

Why would he be charged with something? It's obvious he's crying out for help!

I work at HCMC as a psych nurse, cries for help (or what other commenter calls attention seeking), many times do end in a successful bid to end one's life. I'd rather they seek attention...

why would they release the person's name?

Anthony, if someone is going to commit suicide, they go ahead and do it. Just how Robin Williams did. This was a cry for help, I doubt the guy was going to jump anyway. He just wanted attention.

Killing yourself and taking other people with you doesn't deserve compassion. You going I say the same thing for someone who shoots up the place first?!

Dammit Jon, you're an alcoholic! Dammit Jon you're depressed! Be sure to not hold Scott up from his work. That's way more important.... I pray you guys don't have to deal with suicide

Wow. My little brother took his life at 17. I would do anything for his story to have turned out like this one, but to read the comments on this? Would you being say the same thing if this person had succeeded?

you are the absolute worst type of person if the only thing you're remotely concerned about is the fact this person "made you late for work."

This guy made me 45 minutes late for work today. He screwed up a lot of other people's lives too. Just because you're having a bad life doesn't mean you have some right to piss on the rest of society. There are places depressed people can go to work through their problems. A major freeway during rush hour is not one of them.

What an asshole. Could've hurt or killed a motorist before. Selfish.

I heard about the "incident" on my way to work this morning via MPR, but I didn't know the details until I read this post. Nothing to like about it.

@k2yeb We supposedly value human life in this society, so keeping someone alive is money well spent, besides this kind of thing is often used as a training exercise, rather than faking it in some made up situation, these guys get invaluable real world experience. I guess its a matter of our Christian values, some exercise them in real life, some for an hour Sunday morning.

@henk.tobias0 Last time I checked it was the leftists that advocated for a larger government in order to force the citizenry to act in a certain way but way to knock down the straw man.

Thanks for letting the driver that hit you off the hook. I bet you got out of the car and said "no problem dude, its not your fault, its that fine gent up there on the bridge who caused it." Oh, and the insurance companies will love you two for placing the blame where it clearly lies. Well done!

Don't kid yourself Scotty, hardly anyone noticed you weren't there and those that did were joyous at having 45 minutes of solitude and not having their workday immediately ruined by your negative presence.

henk.tobias0
henk.tobias0 topcommenter

@worksman @henk.tobias0 Your comment makes absolutely no sense. Big Government forcing citizenry to act a certain way? How does that fit in? Forcing people to go to work? Forcing them to drive 394? Do you mean Little Timmy Pawlenty opening up the HOV lane for a "fee?" And straw man? Where do you see that? Do you even know what that means? Sorry, your comment fails on all levels.

worksman
worksman

@henk.tobias0 @worksman St. Louis applies how? What does the wealth or lack thereof of the western suburbs have anything to do with this? Tim Pawlenty, really? What's a straw man, really? Careful, you might just be projecting a little bit?

henk.tobias0
henk.tobias0 topcommenter

@worksman @henk.tobias0 I don't see any answers in your comment, just questions, the answers to which are very obvious to anyone who read my comment. Anyone with basic reading skills anyway.

Funny, you use these terms, strawman and projection but you don't seem to grasp their meaning. I would caution you before you dig yourself deeper, you may be in over your head.

worksman

@henk.tobias0 @worksman What alternate universe do you live in and do you even read your own comments? What exactly do your original comments have to do with the article in question? The answers here are obvious, no one knows, no, and nothing. If you need help with interpreting the English language, you might have attended government schools.

henk.tobias0

@worksman @henk.tobias0 This is a complex concept so its likely that I am wasting my time explaining it to someone of your obvious limitations, but...."Officers on site handled the situation with great professionalism and compassion." This line from the article says it all. When you compare how this situation was handled with how the recent shooting of a deranged man in St. Louis was handled you see the results of the differing philosophies. They're calling that a suicide by cop. Those officers were not compassionate nor were they professional. They shot that man within 15 seconds of pulling up. They pulled in too close to be safe, they jumped out with guns drawn, the didn't try to talk to him, they didn't try to avoid a confrontation, they provoked one by pulling up close and jumping out with guns drawn. That's authoritarianism defined.

I don't expect you too understand, like I said its a complex thought process, one that isn't taught to you homeschoolers.

Have a nice day.
