-- Update at bottom --

Around 6:20 this morning in an area of Plato Boulevard and Wabasha Street, St. Paul police shot and killed a suspect.

It's unclear at this point why police wanted to apprehend the man in the first place, but multiple witness reports indicate the man was throwing rocks and trying to punch officers before he charged at one of them and was gunned down.

Here's what the St. Paul PD said about the incident on Twitter: We reached out to the PD's two public information officers for more information, but haven't heard back as this is published. A press conference outside the PD's headquarters is scheduled for 1 p.m. today.

Here are tweets from reporters who were at the scene: :::: UPDATE ::::

During this afternoon's presser, police, citing a 911 transcript, said the man who was shot by officers this morning was walking down a street wielding a pipe and bashing in windows. At one point a caller said he was "smashing [a] school bus."

The suspect, who was described as Mexican, appeared to be high on something, the caller said.

Officers say the man confronted them with a large rock when they arrived at the scene. Send your story tips to the author, Aaron Rupar. Follow him on Twitter @atrupar.

I think police in the country are on edge and it is affecting their judgement. I can't exactly blame them though with all the recent gun violence and execution style killing of police officers.

Gotta love the person who called the police. "He must be high on something, someone said." - Simon & Garfunkel.

Did Batman run around bashing people's windows in and throwing rocks?

Oh my god! In reading another article on this, the officers had a scuffle with the dude. They didn't just step and and shoot him. You guys are making it sound like he was executed. Police are not fricken ninja masters. They attempted the hands on and still could not get him to cooperate. I'm not saying its okay that someone is dead.I'm saying they did what they thought was necessary to keep other people from getting attack by this person.

Did the "suspect" swing a folding chair around or leap off a ladder?

Police officers should be in better physical/cardio condition than flabby actors in a wrestling ring on a fake TV show.

If you had the proper skills, you should be able to immobilize a man without a firearm with your own two hands.

there have been so many shootings where i hear the person who's been shot is unarmed or has a knife or such, not a gun, and is out-numbered by cops, thats where i think, don't cops have pepper spray and tazers? 3 tazers on one person will take them down instantly and make cuffing and subdueing a ton easier. but everytime they go for the gun lol every single time..

Possible injury to others does not usurp fatal response to mental illness.

The St Paul PD's answer to everything is to shoot it. Dirty bastards.

"Life threatening" I guess is a relative term. And that's EXACTLY the problem. What one person sees as life threatening another doesn't.. When the situation is OBVIOUSLY not and lives are lost people need to be accounted for and we need to rethink our policys

I think it's easy for all of you to talk shit from your couches. I am not PRO violence, nor do I wish for anyone to lose their lives, but who are you to decide if the situation was or wasn't life threatening if you were not there?

So, because he had a "rock" .....that gives Cops the right to shoot and kill the guy? Wow...........sure hope there's no cops down by the Mississippi the next time I'm skipping rocks across the water.

Shoot to kill should only be used as a LAST resort not because you're scared. I think this (should) go without saying. It's pretty much their whole job to assess the level of danger and act APPROPRIATELY

I do know that four plus policemen should be able to handle a man without a gun without shooting him.

Why? Because that's what they do now. Just like shooting dogs. You don't hear of mail carriers or meter readers shooting dogs.

I have and I didn't shoot the man. You are also part of the problem.

Police are not trained to shoot to wound. If an officer makes a decision that he needs to use his or her gun, it is to kill. Being charged at by someone with a weapon (pipe or rock or what ever) is terrifying. See how you handle it when your put in that situation.

Rather have protests then apathy. How many more people need to die senseless-ly because of other people who can't perform their jobs? I really can't see how they're able to use bullets on a suspect if he isn't visually armed with a gun. It makes no sense to me. But hey, that's just like my opinion man

When the gangsters started shooting them and when the chicken piss gang bangers randomly kill innocent people... oh wait... you would't care would you.... Until you were affected....

Who cares - if people what to gang bang, let them, put please, allow the police to shoot them.

@Minneapolis1 No, you did not read it right. He charged them, bad idea.  It's sad that he is dead, but don't charge those who are protecting and serving after throwing rocks at them.   Genius idea huh?

Minneapolis1

@kurt124 @Minneapolis1 he charged them w/o a deadly weapon though? Was this guy mentally ill, do the cops have any training with dealing with the mentally ill? It's clear they don't if they shot him.
