Emergency personnel gather at the scene of Sunday's accident.
-- Update at bottom --

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed this morning that the woman killed by a Green Line train around 10:15 a.m. Sunday is Shana Gail Buchanan, a controversial Twin Cities attorney who we wrote about back in 2012.

Buchanan, 42, reportedly tried to cross the tracks near the Westgate station when she was struck by an eastbound train. Warning lights were flashing and a warning bell was ringing, but Buchanan might not have heard it, as she was wearing headphones at the time.

Green Line construction didn't scare businesses from Central Corridor -- quite the opposite

Here's another photo from the scene: Buchanan's death is the first fatality involving the Green Line, which began service on June 14.

Buchanan came under scrutiny from the Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board for allegedly repeatedly agreeing to take on a client's appeal, getting paid, but then doing no legal work and ignoring clients' attempts to communicate with her.

After we wrote about that scandal back in February 2012, Buchanan took to our comments section to defend herself.

:::: UPDATE ::::

Metro Transit sent us the following statement detailing the circumstances of the incident that claimed Buchanan's life:
At about 10:15 a.m. Sunday an eastbound Green Line train struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the tracks at the Westgate station. The female individual was deceased when emergency personal arrived. About 40 passengers on the train were transported by bus to other destinations. No injuries were reported on the train.

All warning signals at the crossing where the pedestrian was struck looked to be functioning properly but for some reason it appeared the pedestrian did not see or hear the train. Train service was disrupted for about two hours. Buses replaced trains between Prospect Park Station and Raymond Station during this time.

The light rail operator will undergo drug and alcohol testing, per protocol. Metro Transit police continue to investigate.

This is the first fatality on the Green Line since it opened in June. This is the third instance in which a Green Line train has contacted a pedestrian.

First off shame on you City Pages and people who decide to comment without any respect for a lovely woman who has passed.

Shana Buchanan was a loving and kind soul. What some of you may not know is that she was a wonderful teacher, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and most importantly a MOTHER!

Knowing Shana my whole it hurts me to see such hurtful things written about her.

I hope that some of you think twice before you speak on something you have no knowledge of! I hope my little brother never reads these things about his mother. Please remove your hurtful comments! I pray for you all.

RIP Shana

Love,

Brooke Buchanan

We should be using illuminated signs with words in English. Not infographics. Even better: a loudspeaker with a recorded message like they have in Chicago: "An inbound train is now arriving in your station. Please stand behind the yellow line until the train comes to a complete stop." That and some flashing red lights would save lives.

Infographics are posted with the best of intentions, to accommodate Latino and Muslim immigrants who are in the Twin Cities by the thousands. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Infographics cost this woman her life.

I have heard speculation that this was "suicide by train" because she was being disbarred, and even that she put on her headphones to make it look like an accident so her family would get the life insurance money. Such speculation is extremely cruel and another sign that our society is going straight to Hell. Cynicism and contempt have become the two coolest things in the world. Show some respect.

Please remember that Shana was a person who was loved by many, and a devoted mom to her son. To those who are making jokes or using this anonymous forum to be hateful and nasty: would you say these things to a grieving child who has lost his much adored mom? I hope he never sees these horrible posts. I ask that CityPages disable the comment section and remove them from public view. Common human decency would seem to compel this, at least.

Would you people give it a rest?  Please understand the bigger picture with regard to this woman, go visit the scene of the crime, and THEN make your comment if you must.  This platform entrance is an abrupt 90 degree turn off a 50' ramp which is parallel to the tracks.  The lights are NOT in a good spot for this type of physical maneuvering, and the meaning of the lit infographic sign of the train prior to the crossing is unclear. So what - there is a picture of a train.  Does that mean that the train runs on these tracks?  Does that mean that a train is nearby?  is the sign always lit?  The meaning is not really all that clear in a society that relies on words more than infographics.  Yes, Shana was wearing headphones and was in her own head, not paying attention.  A horrible tragedy occurred to a woman who was struggling with mental illness and left behind a sweet 14 year old boy.  Aaron Rupar should be ashamed of himself for publishing a horribly sensationalized story in 2012 about a woman who was suffering from mental illness and then dragging her name through the mud again after her tragic death.  She was not a predator living large on other people's money.  She was a victim of an illness which receives too little sympathy in our society.  To those of us who knew her and tried to help her she was a loving mother and a warm, happy, generous, incredibly bright woman who was a victim of a disease.  Please stop the negativity.  Your comments only show your ignorance and are deeply damaging to the young life she left behind.

Ultimately it is the responsibility of pedestrians to negotiate streets and light rail tracks in a manner that ensures their survival. So often people jaywalk across busy streets, step off curbs into traffic, wander diagonally across busy intersections, and now run/walk across light rail tracks or climb over the barriers to take a shortcut to the other side of University Avenue. Not only do they rely on the ability of a driver to notice them and stop in time but they disrupt the flow of traffic. It is so important for them to realize that light rail trains cannot stop like automobiles do and if they cross in front of a moving train they will likely get struck and killed. Common sense… you cannot pass a law to instill this into people’s brains.

I personally knew her and her beautiful son. The posts I have read on here from the "mean spirited ones" too bad it was not you! Our world could use less of individuals like you! Natural Selection My ASS!  Rest in Peace Shana, we will miss you and we love your son. My thoughts go out to your family during this sad and tragic time.

First, RIP Shana.

I personally believe this was a suicide.  If the lights are flashing - and either the bars are being elevated or going down, you can't miss that, unless you are blind.  She had the headphones on, yes.  Though, I believe that was "an alibi," a "front" to create the view that she was struck by a train.

If you read her history, she has a history of mentai illness that was so severe that it impacted her work, and ultimately, she got disbarred from law.

While I'm not sure if she was working, if she was working - then this would have enabled an insurance payout for her son (as she would have been killed, versus having committed suicide).

Super sad, any way you slice it.  Though, she is not a peace, so hopefully all those in her life have a sense of comfort knowing she is no longer in mental pain.

Please get it right--she walked into the path of a train and was struck. There are no people "hit by trains" when you cross tracks (even inactive ones), you are taking significantly more risks as crossing a street--cars and bicycles can attempt to swerve or stop.

Junie Charlee Davis

In one article I read that she had mental illness so severe that she was banned from practicing law. I'm so NOT downing her. Just wondering if the mental illness could have come into play with this "accident". In any case, May she Rest in Peace in The Light

Wow, what a class act you are, dredging up a two year old piece to get clicks and smear a dead woman. You should be proud of yourself. I notice you didn't bother to follow up and also inform people that Ms. Buchanan was currently on disability suspension due to a mental illness for which she was being treated.

Also, anybody commenting on this who wants to pretend that they're never had a moment of inattention that resulted in a lucky near miss is deluded.

I read your 2012 article on this attorney & I'm thinking the Green Line was a Karmic instrument of cosmic retribution. She was probably trying to be non-fatally struck to engineer a lawsuit & get paid. My office has a lovely view of Hennepin County court & I see dozens of these besuited reptiles sleaze in and out every day....

Anyone who gets hit by a train is a fucking dumbass. Anyone who defends this stupidity is a dumbass. Man I swear the people who get hit by these trains are the same people that don't wait for traffic signs to cross the road. You look both ways before crossing the tracks, and you DO NOT try to attempt to beat the train across the tracks.

What's the point of insulting someone who recently died unless you just want the world to know you are a cold hearted bastard. It was a tragic accident, there's really nothing more to say. Learn some compassion you fucking cunts.

You should be ashamed of yourself for citing an ancient article with such disrespect. Why continue to drag her through the mud? Reading those (all of) 8 comments you created a link to shows how insensitive and inhumane you are. The reference to another "lazy attorney" who is now dead? Come up with an actual story how 'bout and leave this woman alone. It's a disgrace. She has a son! Does your punishment and negative review for him to see one day make you feel better? Pick on someone who can at least fight back and let her Rest In peace. And may you never know the suffering this woman lived through.

There was some later discussion of her matter by the Minnesota Supreme Court that was at least a little more sympathetic to Ms Buchanan's position. http://caselaw.findlaw.com/mn-supreme-court/1644179.html  Regardless, no doubt she is now missed by some loved ones, and I pass my sympathy on to those people who might read this and drop it at that.

It happens much more than you think...there's been at least three cases of this happening where I live in the East Bay in the last six months! Unfortunately people are way more in tune with their technology than their surroundings and unfortunately are oblivious to their surroundings! It's sad that it's come to this but it is costing people their lives and I don't see it ending anytime too soon! People do just walk in front of trains with terrible consequences!

@buchananb I'm sorry for your loss. But what news would ever get out into the world if we allowed relatives (grieving or not) to censor anything they felt might be hurtful? You KNOW that, given the situation, people are going to say some things that are rude, possibly untrue, etc. The smart thing for you to do is not to look at any of the media coverage.

@deanhinnen The times I've ridden the Green Line, there have been announcements of trains coming, both over the speakers and written on a scrolling announcement board. Ms. Buchanan may not have heard them, as she had headphones on. Note that the article says that there WERE flashing lights. Presumably she ignored them.

@blueball You are completely wrong about all of your comments.  This was not a suicide.  Anyone who knew her will tell you that nothing could be further from the truth.  Go visit the scene of the crime during the day and you will see how completely possible it is to miss the train coming if you aren't paying attention!

If you are James Robert Meisinger, DOB 7/18/1978, then we are all glad you apparently didn't kill anyone while driving drunk before the Department of Public Safety cancelled your drivers license as inimical to public safety. What does a drunk driving domestic abuser deserve?

Dao - you are a mean person.  Not sure what you have going on in our life, but to be so mean spirited and "laugh out loud" about someone's mother getting hit by a train - is super mean.  Imagine if her 14 yr old son read your post.  The poor kid is already beside himself.

so because you are too stupid to watch for a train we all have to pay billions more for a subway? Typical democrat, you want all your stupidity taken into consideration but want someone else to pay for it. ps I will buy you a monthly pass for the rail line and a set of headphones

s.mascari

unless you were going to fork over the money, it wouldn't have happened.  It would have cost so much extra money to make it above ground, underground being nearly impossible.  It would have been another reason for people to bitch over the cost of the light rail.

blueball

Ian - use the noodle.  All signs here post at this having been a suicide.  This was not a "dumbass" stupidity move, but in my opinion, one that was very strategic.  Think about it.

spincut13
spincut13

@jokesonyou Gred didn't say he was a democrat, he just has an opinion about train logistics, one I and many others happen to agree with (although yes, money always was an issue...not that they aren't already spending plenty of it to build what we do have, which in a state with the winters we have seems hardly feasible, unless you like freezing to death below a poorly working heat lamp).

Anyway, your attempt to make this about politics as if we're talking about a football match is kind of sad. I won't make any presumptions about your political affiliation (except that you aren't a democrat I guess), but your behavior is typical of something else..want to guess what it is?

Random insecure vitriol against democrats so hard that you actually LOOK to assign the label speaks to a larger personal problem, it would seem.
