A yearly occurrence, the Bell Museum's Bioblitz is a 24-hour event where students, children, scientists, and nature fanatics race to document as many species as possible within a small area of town. Each year between 750 and 1,000 species are counted. City Pages took a moment to speak with Jennifer Menkin, Bioblitz coordinator for the 2007 science bonanza.

City Pages: What sort of crowd do you get at this event?

Jennifer Menkin: It varies wildly—it's all volunteers, so usually we get a mix of scientists, students, kids. Some of the naturalists that show up know as much about wildflowers or fungus as someone with a Ph.D. in biology would. Depending on the year we can get as many as 500 people.

3Q: incoming Star Tribune editor Nancy Barnes

Nancy-Barnes.jpg
Yesterday Nancy Barnes was named the new editor of the Star Tribune. She came to Minnesota from the Raleigh News & Observer in 2003 and previously served as the paper's managing editor for content. Barnes takes over at a time of great flux for the state's largest daily newspaper. In late December the McClatchy Company announced that it was selling the Strib to Avista Capital Partners for $530 million. The deal is expected to go through in early March. I reached Barnes by telephone this afternoon.

3Q New Minneapolis Foundation President-to-be Sandy Vargas

Earlier this week, trustees of the Minneapolis Foundation announced they had chosen Hennepin County Administrator Sandy Vargas to succeed Emmett Carson as their new President and CEO. As the top unelected executive in Minnesota's largest county government since 1999, Vargas has played a major role in the way Hennepin County wields its $2 billion budget. She comes to a venerable foundation boosted by Carson's successful 12-year tenure, particularly in its highlighting and addressing of racial disparties in this region, and in promoting and managing philanthropy. The Minneapolis Foundation currently manages $640 million in assets, administers more than 800 charitable funds and distributes about $40 million in grants each year. Vargas will begin her new position on April 1.

Today marks the beginning of the 2007 Minnesota Legislature at the Capitol, and the reign of new Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher (DFL-Mpls.). City Pages caught up with Kelliher for a brief preview of the session just before she left for New Year's weekend late last Friday afternoon.

City Pages: So there seems to be a general consensus that the basics--education, health care, transportation, and property tax reform--will be the focus this budget year. How do you see them shaping up?

Margaret Anderson Kelliher: I think for a long time we've been talking about three of the four--education, health care and attacking the increases in property taxes--and of course transportation is a pressing need in the state and I know something will need to be getting done there is a bipartisan way too. Actually, I'm glad to see the way the governor has reached out already on some of these things, particularly on [providing] children with health care issue. I think there is a lot of room to get things done in this legislative session.
