Tax dollars for NASCAR? Betty McCollum says no.
Rep. Betty McCollum has become the target of some vile hate mail from a NASCAR fan.

The St. Paul congresswoman just tried unsuccessfully to defund the U.S. Army's $7 million NASCAR car sponsorship, labeling it as a waste of taxpayer money.

For that, a message faxed anonymously to her office called McCollum a "JoBama Rectum Sniffing Slut." The message included a drawing of a pickup truck towing the head of President Barack Obama in a noose.

Big Bird: Not worthy of your tax dollars?
Rep. Betty McCollum and some other House members stood on the Capitol steps with Elmo and Big Bird yesterday, deriding Republicans for trying to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's $451 million operating budget.

PBS is an oasis in the vast wasteland of commercial television, and "Tea Party Republicans want to completely wipe out this critical resource and weaken our communities," she said.

Republicans went Gonzo.

McCollum reminds the Rwandan government of U.S. generosity in foreign aid
Will this help? Rep. Betty McCollum has introduced, and Keith Ellison has cosponsored, a U.S. House resolution calling on the Rwandan government to release accused genocide denier William Mitchell law professor Peter Erlinder from prison.

She's hoping an appeal to that country's self-proclaimed adherence to the rule of law and humanitarianism -- as well as its need for foreign aid from the U.S. -- will bring him home.

Erlinder was arrested in May after entering the country to defend Victoire Ingabire, who is accused of denying the 1994 Rwandan genocide, collaborating with a terrorist organization and inciting ethnic hatred.

The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building after Timothy McVeigh's act of anti-government terrorism.
U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum raised eyebrows last week when she took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to ask certain unnamed colleagues to cool their overheated right-wing rhetoric as the nation prepares to remember the anti-government terrorist attack by Timothy McVeigh that killed 168 innocent people in Oklahoma City.

McVeigh struck on this date in 1995. He was executed for his murderous act in 2001.

As we've said, the District 4 congresswoman's call for civility was greeted with anger from some on the right.

"Outrageous" howled Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Cole, of Oklahoma. "Deeply offensive."

McCollum refuses to stand down. When Michele Bachmann tarred the Democrats again last week of running a "gangster government" gangster government, McCollum called sent out this press release:

U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum
For a change of pace, we have a Minnesota congresswoman asking her colleagues to calm down and see the nation's affairs with a little perspective: Democratic U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum on the House floor Tuesday in support of a resolution marking the 15th anniversary of Timothy McVeigh's domestic terrorism in Oklahoma City.

"When Members of Congress compare health care legislation to 'government tyranny,' 'socialism,' or 'totalitarianism' in hopes of scoring political points it's like pouring gas on the fire of extremism," she said. "I implore my colleagues to temper their rhetoric and not allow the words of a member of Congress to ever be used by any violent militia or hate-filled phony patriots to cause violence."

Keeping it classy, someone angry about the passage of health care reform -- and unwilling to identify themselves -- has mailed a condom to Rep. Betty McCollum's St. Paul district office with the declaration: "Betty McCollum you've been dry f***** by the liberal party."

Maria Reppas, McCollum's spokester, told CNN the condom was in a plastic bag but out of its original wrapper, and was mailed on March 23.
