First Avenue: Gearing up for battle with another deep-pocketed competitor.
Another downtown Minneapolis venue battle may be on the verge of heating up.

Yesterday, the Star Tribune reported that AEG Live will soon open a new concert space at the former site of Christian music venue Club 3 Degrees off N. 5th St. near Target Field. Also yesterday, First Avenue announced that the club is in the midst of a renovation project meant to "increase sightlines and capacity."

Remember when Quest fought a losing battle against First Avenue in the early 2000s? It looks like the iconic club has another deep-pocketed challenger on the horizon, with the renovations perhaps meant to get First Avenue in tip-top fighting shape.

Bob Dylan childhood poem up for sale 52 years later

BobDylancrop.jpg
Former Herzl Herald editor Lisa Heilicher had a secret hidden under the "Z" heading in an encyclopedia she owned: a poem written by Bob Dylan in the summer of 1957.

The poem, called "Little Buddy," was published in the Herzl Camp newspaper.

Dylan, who was known as Bobby Zimmerman at the time, must have been a lonely, depressed camper. His poem tells the story of a sad child mourning their dead dog. What a skippy little camp poem topic, right?

The poem, handwritten on white paper, will be auctioned off next month. It is expected to sell for up to $15,000.

Imran Hussain is a database analyst for Wells Fargo in Downtown Minneapolis. It's loads different from his former life in Bangladesh, where he was a founding member of Rock Strata, a group that pioneered the heavy sound now called Bangle. He plays guitar in the "What's That?" (a Radiohead Project). This would be like Krist Novoselic of Nirvana trading in Grunge fame to play tiny crowds in a tribute band. No matter, playing the tunes of Radiohead is different, Imran explains in a beautiful note written to City Pages.

With the St. Olaf Christmas festival comes the yearly talk of beauty and birth. Since the festival centers around Jesus, that's fine and wonderful.
