Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke:
  • A look at the life and work of the mercurial, notorious, and mightily talented, Mel Gibson. Just what are we to make of this man? A peak into the Nylez Files with Nylez Schwartz.
  • Also a live report from the courthouse. A Cretin-Derham Hall teacher stands accused of having sex with a student. The teacher is the daughter of one of our state's most famous wrestler's (No, not Ventura). Just what exactly went on here?
  • Finally, a discussion with JD Salinger. I booked this interview two years ago and am finally ready to have at the man. I'm told I'm the only one he scheduled an interview with in 2010. Looking forward to tearing away the veil and exposing the mind of this artist.

Mischke show notes: Jan. 29, 2010

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke:

This film has it's premier tonight at the Walker Art Center. Today I'll be interviewing the courageous Chinese director (using a translator) who's responsible for it.

Mischke show notes: Jan. 28, 2010

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke:

  • A weekly visit with the "Q." Quinton Skinner visits to discuss, among other things, this: It has been learned that nearly 1 in 10 eight year olds hears voices that aren't really there. This is according to a new study. The study also learned that most children who hear voices don't find them troubling in the least. Parents, consequently, whose children hear voices, should not be overly concerned. Up to 16 percent of mentally healthy children and teens may hear voices, the researchers noted in the British Journal of Psychiatry. But again, no harm no foul. My question: Whose voices are these? And just what are they saying.
  • Plus: He's gone. JD Salinger has passed away. A brief funeral for the man, today, in the stream.

Get your scuba gear, we're goin' under.

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke:

  • First I'll have Emily Kaiser discussing her interesting cover feature on the 70's rock group, "Haze."
  • Following that, a member of the band joins the show, "Baby Tang." He'll talk about the grief he took, years ago, digging white man's music as a black man. (I thought it was white guys who always dug black guys' music?)
  • Lastly: David Hansen makes his weekly visit. We'll be talking talking traitors. (Are you one?)

  • A look at Emily Kaiser's wonderful feature on the grand search for a long-forgotten Twin Cities rock band: The story of "Haze," and the lone woman who was determined to track them down some 30 years after they faded away.

Also, "Moose:" The man behind the new all-white basketball league forming in the American South. Seems the more things change the more they stay the same.

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke:

  • We have a cub! Came into the world at about 11:35 a.m. today. Saw its tiny skinny arm reach out to it's mothers face and heard those sweet human like baby sounds live. First time in all of history humans have witnessed this. Of course, soon after servers everywhere crashed. Too much traffic.
  • My guest in the stream today: A local Rabbi. In its four years of existence, Yeshiva High School has exceeded expectations in every area except one -- raising money -- and that might be the one that kills it. The only Jewish boarding school in the Twin Cities needs to come up with $600,000 in donations and pledges to pay off its mortgage by Feb. 7 or it will be forced to close. Why is this school so special, and what are they up against?
  • Lastly: Andrea Swensson has a special announcement about Hatti and local music.

  • Also: Neal Justin from the Star Tribune. Their TV critic tears into the late night talk wars. My God in heaven it's ugly! And ugly is cool when you do what I do.
  • Lastly: David "WTF" Hansen blows in with the strangest peaks at the fringes of this planet ever heard in audio form. Boogilboo.

    • Also: Minnesota goes berserk this week. Insanity reigns. Non-sports fans become sports fans, Brett Favre goes viral, and Judd Spicer swoops in to come at it all from an odd new angle.

  • Dr. Robert Givenson. He's the author of the new book, "They're Killing Us." It's an extraordinary story of a man who swears US government operatives are poisoning him and his family because the family has learned the truth behind the Oklahoma City Bombing: That federal building was actually blown up by the US Army. My guest says he has only a few weeks left to live. I interview him from his hospital bed.

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke:

  • How much hope, inspiration and transformation can bloom inside the walls of prison? Dr. Jennifer Salima Holt, PhD, discovered the answer to that and other questions after volunteering for several years leading grief and loss groups in U.S. women's prisons. That life-changing experience -- not only for Holt, who describes herself today as a "New Thought Muslim" -- but her imprisoned subjects as well -- yielded a compelling new book, Sacred Gateway of Grief and Loss: Freeing the Imprisoned Soul.

  • Go swimming with Gene Kent Nitz. He has traveled the world for business and pleasure, all the while collecting interesting historical tidbits. He has never applied for a job in his life. Gene has edited newspapers, managed theaters, expanded a film theater chain, negotiated union contracts, wrote publicity campaigns for foreign films and operated a travel agency. He is the author of "The Little Book of Rare and Unpublished Oddities."
  • Also:" Traveling the movie miles with Nylez. Looking at two very different four-star films, "Goodbye Solo" and "Crazy Heart."
  • Lastly: Patching things up between Old Pauley and City Page's own Judd Spicer. I'll explain on the program as I invite the two of them on together for a pow-wow.

Mischke show notes: Jan. 11, 2009

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke:

Today in the stream:

A replay from November featuring a local author and his book on Minneapolis

Today, Minneapolis is one of the most desirable places to live in the Midwest. However, it had a checkered history.

Iric Nathanson shines a light in dark corners of the city's past, exploring corruption that existed between the police department and city hall, brutal suppression of Depression-era unions, and anti-Semitism. Also, the "long hot summer" of 1967, when racial violence exploded.

Nathanson skillfully tells these stories and more, always with an eye toward how noteworthy characters, plotlines, and scenes that helped create the Minneapolis we know today.

Nathanson has written and lectured about local history for more than two decades. An instructor for the University of Minnesota's Ocher Lifelong Learning Institute, he has published essays in the Star Tribune, Minnesota History, and Hennepin History.

I grew up with Elvis Presley. We were extremely close. In fact, Elvis used to say I was like the twin brother he never got to know (his twin was stillborn).

A lot of people don't know about Elvis the adolescent, Elvis the toddler, Elvis the teen. I do. Yes, I did lose track of him when he became famous, but I was his soul mate when were young together. Today is his birthday. And I want to talk to you about my old pal. Please tune in. Thank you.

Jimmy Carter is my guest today. He doesn't know it, but so what?

Also: The dolphin as "non-human person." Scientists says it's time to give it this very designation. Republicans worry that certain Americans may want to legalize marrying the creatures. I say the right is off base on this one.

Plus: The weekly visit with City Pages Theater Critic Quinton Skinner. We'll talk about important, sophisticated, interesting stuff that only we understand.

And lastly: The end of the wind chill factor. Is it time to retire it once and for all? Personally, I think it blows.

C'mon, let's get wet jet set!!!!

Avatar. There has been no film like it in history. It is making more money than many thought humanly possible. Critics are raving, their jaws plastered to the floor. James Cameron is "King of the World" once again. But wait...........

Tune in today for a different take entirely.

Also: What the flamin' hooty hoo is this particular ailament?: Fatal Familial Insomnia. Well, it's a genetic condition suffered by betwen 40 and 50 families on the planet that can all be traced back to a 15th century Italian doctor who carried the mutation. By the age of 40, the gland in the brain that produces the sleep hormone disengages. These people slowly die of insomnia over the course of 9 to 15 months. Not one moment of restorative sleep can they find. Heard of it?

And lastly: The Aghori: The most fearfed sect of the Hindus. They worship Shiva, God of life and destruction, and live their lives in Indian cremation grounds, living off of food and clothes offered to the dead, covering themselves in bone ash to resemble shivas. They are cannibals. They beg with a bowl fashioned from a human skull. Heard of 'em?

My New Year's resolution is to become a bad ass. What's yours? Yeah, you caught it correctly, I want to be a bad ass. I've never been one. Never really even knew one. But in 2010 I sure as hell plan to become one. Mischke: Badass! Has a cool ring to it doesn't it? Part of becoming a badass is knowing what a badass is. For that I'm turning to an expert.

Meet Author Ben Thompson. He's going to take me inside the fist-banging, gun-slinging, war-mongering and blood-thirsty world of some of the meanest SOBs in history. These are some of the toughest bastards to ever live, a rogues' gallery of the greatest butt kickers of all time. I'm excited as hell. Come join me won't you? Get yourself your own Badassitude, people!

Also in the stream: The new hot bloggers in Minnesota. Who are they and what are they saying? I'll interview one of them and find out what's creating all those hits.

Finally. Hart Van Denburg and the weekly blotto show. A look at the news this City Pages staffer has been busy putting together over at the Mother Ship.

Mischke Show Notes: Dec. 16, 2009

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke:

  • A discussion with David Hansen about a local Ukrainian chess master. Viktor Adler is in his 60s. He lives in Burnsville. Born in the Ukraine and raised to be a chessmaster, he lost a decade of his peak playing time in a Siberian gulag (he's a Jew, and was never a party member). He came to the US after the fall of the Soviet Union, lacking any marketable skills. He is an international master, but his life's dream is to be a grand master, the highest possible rank.
  • Also: A tale about a racehorse named Sacre Bleu who, while cribbing, carved a picture of a horse jumping over a fence in his stable door with just his teeth.
  • Plus: The woman behind this video, which was made recently in West St. Paul.

  • I write about Santa for this weeks issue of City Pages. The Santa in my column is not the one in your imagination. It's one of these.
  • Judd Spice-rack 'em-up-stack 'em-up appears for his weekly chat-arama and something odd happens. No, seriously, things go in a decidedly different direction than planned. It won't be my doing, I'll tell you that.
  • The Golden Globe nominations are out. Time to talk film with our resident scholar, Nylez. Looking at four different movies today: "Bad Lieutenant," "Invictus," "Me and Orson Welles," and "Up in the Air." Plus: Werner Herzog won't die. Seriously.
