Mischke Show Notes: Nov. 13, 2009

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke: John Geiger

  • "I consider John Geiger a fellow writer of exploration literature." - William S. Burroughs

John Grigsby Geiger: The author of five books of non-fiction, translated into nine languages. He is Editorial Board Editor at The Globe and Mail, and a Senior Fellow at Massey College, University of Toronto. He is a Governor of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and Chairman of the Society's Expeditions Committee, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club, and a Member of the Advisory Board of Wings Worldquest.

Our discussion will center on his book, "The Third Man Factor."

"The Third Man Factor" is a biography of an extraordinary idea: That people at the very edge of death, often adventurers or explorers, experience a sense of an incorporeal being beside them who encourages them to make one final effort to survive.

If only a handful of people had ever experienced the Third Man, it might be dismissed as an unusual delusion shared by a few overstressed minds. But the amazing thing is this: over the years, the experience has occurred again and again, to 9/11 survivors, mountaineers, divers, polar explorers, prisoners of war, solo sailors, aviators and astronauts. All have escaped traumatic events only to tell strikingly similar stories of having experienced the close presence of a helper, a guardian or a guide.

Get in the water, people. Tune in from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and feel free to leave comments about today's show below. Call and talk to Mischke live on the air: (651) 330-4091

Mischke Show Notes: Nov. 12, 2009

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke: a discussion of the following with Quinton Skinner:

  • Anyone who was ever involved in a formal debate program or who took a beginning philosophy class is familiar with the concept of logical fallacies. Logical fallacies are common ways of thinking or arguing that are superficially appealing, but upon analysis they are found to be false. Logical fallacies are easy to commit and difficult to identify. Some of the more common logical fallacies include:

  • David Hansen discusses the story of the HMS Mary Celeste, one of the greatest maritime mysteries of all time. Over 125 years ago, the ship was found floating, crewless, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, in pristine condition. The fate of the crew and passengers has never been explained.

Mischke Show Notes: Nov. 10, 2009

Today on Citypages.com's 'In The Stream' with T.D. Mischke: A conversation with Paul Metsa.
  • You could never pack Virginia, Minn., native, Paul Metsa, into a convenient music slot. For 30 years he's rambled through the rock, blues, folk, jam band and singer-songwriter scenes with an uncanny literary sensibility and a rock 'n' roll heart nearly as big -- and as torn -- as an open pit mine up on the Range. Now with 30 years and more than 6,000 gigs in the rear view mirror, Metsa is ready to explore his life's work -- and some of its back alleys -- Nov. 27 at the Parkway Theater at 9 p.m. The retrospective, seen through the eye of this rock raconteur, and heard in the musical prowess of invited musicians and special surprise guests, is aptly titled "Skyway to Hell" (the site of his very first gig in town at the Skyway Lounge as the opening act for some strippers).

Ironically yours truly and other conservatives created the market for FOX during the Clinton era, which those bums continue to capitalize on.
