Madison union supporters plan Minneapolis demonstration Monday afternoon

​More than 1,000 people turned out on Saturday in St. Paul to demonstrate solidarity with union workers in Madison, and now a march has been scheduled for 4 p.m. today in downtown Minneapolis.

A rally will begin at 4 p.m. at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 6th St. S., and be followed by the march to a location that has yet to be announced.

Election day comes early for sandwich workers.
​The drive by some Minneapolis Jimmy John's workers to form the first fast-food-workers union in the country was defeated today by a margin of 87 votes to 85.

Several dozen union supporters, as well as franchise owners Mike and Rob Mulligan, gathered in the former Hooters restaurant in the City Center to watch officials from the National Labor Relations Board count the ballots.

​By tomorrow evening, we'll know whether the workers at 10 Minneapolis Jimmy John's sandwich shops have made history as the first American fast-food workers to unionize their workplace.

After years of intermittent underground organizing capped by a high-profile public campaign over the last two months, it all comes down to tomorrow's official vote on whether to unionize.

Sandwich workers vote on the union Oct. 22.
​Things have been developing quickly since we told you about the unionizing drive by workers at Minneapolis Jimmy John's restaurants.

The National Labor Relations Board has set a date for the election: Oct. 22. That gives the union supporters and the owners a scant three weeks to convince a majority of employees at the ten locations to vote the union up or down.

12,000 Twin Cities nurses strike. Who's affected? [Video]

​In what may be the largest ever strike of its kind, 12,000 Twin Cities nurses have walked off the job at 14 area hospitals in a 24-hour strike over pay, pensions and staffing ratios. Outside Abbott Northwestern in Minneapolis, they greeted the day with a rendition of "Amazing Grace."

The hospitals have shipped in 2,800 replacement nurses, as well as extra doctors, nurse practitioners and other health care delivery pros to try and cover for the walkout, and says that ERs and birthing centers won't be affected by the strike. Estimated cost to the hospitals: $4.5 million.

Two of the largest hospitals in the area are not affected by the strike: Regions Hospital in St. Paul and Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Here are the hospitals that are affected:
