President Bush plays a guitar presented to him by country singer Mark Wills, right, backstage following his visit to Naval Base Coronado, Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005. Bush visited the base to deliver remarks on V-J Commemoration Day. Meanwhile, a major U.S. city is under water, hundreds are dead, thousands are stranded, and damage to structures, many of historical significance, will run in the billions of dollars. Didn't think I could be more ashamed of the president. I was wrong.

Thought I'd pass along this information about Gen. JC Christian's Operation Yellow Elephant Blog Your Campus contest. Here's the scoop from the general himself:
Many of you may be familiar with the Freeway Blogger's brilliant work. We'd like to see something similar happening at or near college campuses. To that end, Operation Yellow Elephant is holding a "Blog Your Campus" contest.
Description
Create signs relating to Operation Elephant's mission to expose the hypocrisy of hawkish College Republicans and other young conservatives who are too cowardly to fight in the war they demanded. Post these signs near roadways and pedestrian pathways on or near college campuses. Photograph your work and send it to me. I'll post them here. In early October, the OYE contributing Writers and the Freeway Blogger will pick a winner.
How to Make Your Sign
It's always a good idea to learn from the masters.
How to Win
Send us a photo featuring a sign with a great message and lots of people or cars traveling past it. If it generates press, it wouldn't hurt to send us a url or a clipping.
Grand Prizes
Second and Third Place Prizes
Rules
1. Signs must be placed near roadways or pedestrian pathways on or near campus.
2. Photos of the signs must demonstrate that the sign can be viewed by many people (people or cars in the foreground)
3. Submit your entries here no later than September 30, 2005.
4. Vaughn adds this: Make sure the sign really kicks ass, it's easy to see, and it's clear that it is not a fake. I'm a Photoshop master, so don't f&*k with me and you will get your musical device -- grasshopper. Perhaps take photos of the sign making process including the hanging of it?

Congratulations to President George W. Bush on surpassing Ronald Reagan's vacation record today! Bush breaks the Gipper's record of 335 days, with two weeks of vacation still left this year! At this pace, Bush'll log over 400 vacation days by the time his tenure ends. That's a lot of brush clearing and bike riding! I'll see everyone else back at work on Monday!

MACON, Ga. -- A woman was charged Tuesday with leaving her newborn baby in a Wal-Mart bathroom toilet, covered in trash and tissue paper. The child survived. Diane Shorter, 26, was jailed on charges of aggravated assault and cruelty to a child. The child was recovered before Wal-Mart could put her to work in the shoe department.

CARY, N.C. -- The distance between Cary's Greenwood Forest Baptist Church and the building that houses the Baptist State Convention is only two miles. But it's beginning to seem like 2,000. This month, the church begins withholding the money it contributes to the state convention in protest after the pastor of the church and a lay leader were denied positions as trustees at two of the convention's institutions. Greenwood Forest has fallen into disfavor with the convention because it contributes money to a liberal Baptist group that supports same-sex marriage.

From Kevin Hayden, who runs the American Street blog:
Eight days after losing my older brother Tom due to brain tumors, my youngest brother, Matt, died last night at 11 pm Eastern, of injuries sustained in an auto accident, possibly caused by his drug abuse. I'll now be attending a memorial service for two, scheduled by coincidence on my Mom's 81st birthday.
Give him a little love here, right nav, below the dumb-looking Bill Maher ad.

In the Bush administration's never-ending public relations war, top officials have decided to change the name of the 'War on Terror' to 'Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism.' War sounds pretty macho, but I suppose struggle makes it seem less scary, like when you struggle with getting your pants off in the dark after a long night of drinking. The following are rejected names for the War on Terror:
Armed Forces World Tour 2003-2047
The Global War on Lots of Stuff
Battle of the Global Network Stars
The Global Struggle Against Nations That Harbor Oil Reserves
Terrorpalooza
Worldwide Quest for Republican Votes
World War 2.1
Leave No Halliburton Contract Behind
Punt, Pass, and Kick Some Terrorist Ass!
