Gwinnett County, GA— Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular Harry Potter book series is an "evil" attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion. Board of Education attorney Victoria Sweeny said that if schools were to remove all books containing reference to witches, they would have to ban Macbeth and Cinderella. Mallory began her crusade in September 2005, requesting the books removed from her children's school, J.C. Magill Elementary. In April 2006, Mallory and her supporters said the books needed to go because the stories are dark, violent and inappropriate for children, completely unlike stories from William Shakespeare or the Bible. The Gwinnett school board in May unanimously ruled in favor of the books.

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri -- Missouri legislators in Jefferson City considered a bill that would name Christianity the state's official "majority" religion. The resolution would recognize "a Christian god," and it would not protect minority religions, but "protect the majority's right to express their religious beliefs." The resolution also recognizes that, "a greater power exists," and only Christianity receives what the resolution calls, "justified recognition." And you thought having an official state muffin was stupid! These "war on Christmas" and "Christians under attack" canards are really getting ridiculous. In a country that's over 80 percent Christian, this is simply a message to Muslims, Jews, and atheists - we hate you, go back where you came from, you're different from us, and we feel funny around you. Forty years after the Civil Rights movement, we're going to enact laws denouncing non-Christians and pass state constitutional amendments making gays second class citizens because the thought of two guys kissing each other makes Michele Bachmann feel oogie.
In 230 years, we go from "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness," to "protect[ing] the majority's right." I don't think I can wait till noon to start drinking today.

ATLANTA, Georgia -- A 15-year-old boy, whose 37-year-old wife is due to give birth to the couple's baby this month, has run away from a group home, and his wife through her lawyer says she has no idea where he is. Lisa Clark, the child molester/wife, claims she doesn't know where her husband/pimple-faced punk is, but the kid's granny thinks Clark's got him locked in the basement. "I think she's got him hidden out someplace," Judy Hayles told The Associated Press on Thursday. Clark is scheduled to appear on "The Tyra Banks Show" today. What, Springer's not good enough for you?

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Michelle Duggar just delivered her 16th child, and she's already thinking about doing it again. Arkansans loves them their marital sex, that's for sure. Husband Jim Bob, yes... it's Jim Bob, a former state representative, stated, "We both just love children and we consider each a blessing from the Lord. I have asked Michelle if she wants more and she said yes, if the Lord wants to give us some she will accept them." See, Jim Bob, can I call you Jim Bob? Of course I can, because it's your first, or first and middle names. Jim Bob, the Lord doesn't "give you" babies like he's handing out submarine sandwich coupons as you exit a baseball game, you actually impregnate your wife when you have sexual relations with her and don't use a condom. Maybe you should at least vaguely pass that info along to the four of your 16 kids that are now old enough for the Lord to "give them" babies.

Charlottesville -- The recent surge of racist incidents at the University of Virginia is a blow to a two-year effort by the institution to end a lingering legacy of racial segregation and inequality, and has left many black students feeling shaken and looking at their colleagues with a wary eye.

MACON, Ga. -- A woman was charged Tuesday with leaving her newborn baby in a Wal-Mart bathroom toilet, covered in trash and tissue paper. The child survived. Diane Shorter, 26, was jailed on charges of aggravated assault and cruelty to a child. The child was recovered before Wal-Mart could put her to work in the shoe department.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit Thursday on behalf of black employees at the plant who claim white workers posted the sign on the locked bathroom and allowed only whites to use it.

CARY, N.C. -- The distance between Cary's Greenwood Forest Baptist Church and the building that houses the Baptist State Convention is only two miles. But it's beginning to seem like 2,000. This month, the church begins withholding the money it contributes to the state convention in protest after the pastor of the church and a lay leader were denied positions as trustees at two of the convention's institutions. Greenwood Forest has fallen into disfavor with the convention because it contributes money to a liberal Baptist group that supports same-sex marriage.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 22-year-old man faces criminal charges in Nebraska for having sex with an underage 13-year-old girl, although he legally married her in Kansas after she became pregnant. The man's lawyer said the couple, with their families' support, "made a responsible decision to try to cope with the problem." Which problem? The fact that the man couldn't keep his hands off a 13-year-old girl? That you can legally marry a 13-year-old girl in Kansas? That he didn't take precautions to ensure his wife, who should be in 8th grade learning creationism, would not have a child?

TAMPA, Fla. -- Ronnie Paris would shake, wet himself and vomit as his father forced him into a box and repeatedly slapped him on the head in an effort to prevent him from being gay, the child's mother, Nysheerah Paris, testified Monday. The boy was 3 years old when he died from swelling on both sides of the brain on January 28. Here's hoping the dead child's father, Ronnie Paris Jr., spends the rest of his life being someone's bitch in the state pen.

JACKSON, Miss. -- A Christian adoption agency that receives money from Choose Life license plate fees said it does not place children with Roman Catholic couples because their religion conflicts with the agency's "Statement of Faith." Let the American Holy War begin! Everyone wants the U.S. to be a Christian nation, as long as it's their sect of Christianity. You know, the right one.

TOPEKA, Kan. - Sen. Kay O'Connor announced Wednesday that she is seeking the GOP nomination for secretary of state next year. O'Connor, 63, has served in the Legislature since 1993. In 2001, O'Connor took off her apron and stepped out of the kitchen and/or bedroom to deliver the following statement: "I think the 19th Amendment, while it's not an evil in and of itself, is a symptom of something I don't approve of. The 19th Amendment is around because men weren't doing their jobs, and I think that's sad. I believe the man should be the head of the family. The woman should be the heart of the family."

An independent investigation of the Atlanta-area Boy Scouts found that the organization inflated its number of black Scouts by more than 5,000 in a program for inner-city youth. Auditors said Scout officials assigned to inner-city areas may have felt pressure to demonstrate membership growth, which is a part of their performance evaluations. Membership numbers also are used to help determined funding from the United Way, a major Scouts donor.

WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- A North Texas school district has apologized to a student identified only as "Black Girl" in a high school yearbook photo of the school's National Honor Society. All white students are identified by name in the photograph in the Waxahachie High School yearbook distributed Friday. The teen identified as "Black Girl" is the only black student in the photo.
