Red Bull on the Stone Arch

illume.jpg
Those giant rectangular black boxes on the Stone Arch Bridge are not, unfortunately, giant screen televisions permanently set to Ace of Cakes. They’re actually part of Red Bull’s traveling photography show, Illume.

One Red Bull girl setting up the exhibit in a tiny white tank top says the exhibit includes an opening night party this Thursday. “I think it starts at ten and then goes until mid-night,” she adds with a yawn. This, we believe, is the first yawn ever yawned in the history of Red Bull girls. Her hand even came up to cover her mouth.

The 50 images are the winners of the illume photo competition. The PR pamphlet the Red Bull girl handed out to citypages says, “The exhibition showcases the most dramatic collection of sports photography ever assembled.” And some of the picture actually back up the talk, like one shot from Wade Mckoy that shows a sequenced shot of Jamie Pierre dropping 250 feet off a cliff.

It takes the corporate arts world to a whole new level.

Here’s the youtube of it:

The exhibit will run from July 10th-20th. Runners, expect high traffic. Drinkers, don't count on any vodka.

I guess I won't need to drink as much red bull anymore now that I can't bike one of my favorite bike paths.

Hope the city is getting paid well for this. Higher traffic with 3/4ths less space for two hours worth of Xtreme pictures...worst idea ever.

This is the most ridiculous thing ever! There are humongous black boxes in the middle of the stone arch bridge!!

What the hell was the city thinking? Why would you obstruct my route to work for an exhibit that only happens for a couple hours LATE AT NIGHT!!?? Anyone who wants to go watch this show should where a helmet in case they get hit by a bike!

Would they put this kind of exhibit on Lyndale or Hennepin? Oh, noooo. There's cars, we can't do that. I'm ashamed of anyone involved in making this decision. I have friends coming to town from overseas. I have to explain that my city was more concerned with 25 grand for the permit for this 'show' than it was about MID JULY BIKE TRAFFIC!!!

I heard the cubes jump around and attack people.

Bikers need to shut the hell up.. The bridge isn't exclusive to bikers only and if you can't appreciate art even though it is corporate sponsored it is still art that will be available to anyone.. And viewable under the stars at night.. Really cool.
