Ordway Summer Dance Series combines free dance and film this summer

Of all the free performance series going on around town this summer this interactive, bi-weekly event looks to be a one of the most fun. During the summer the Ordway will be hosting free music, dance, and movies for two nights each week. Starting tomorrow, from June 17 to August 13, the Landmark Plaza (5th & Market in downtown St. Paul) will be hosting a party from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday nights. Each event starts off with a social hour where guests can purchase food and cocktails from restaurants including Pazzaluna and the Saint Paul Hotel. At 6 p.m. instructors from Arthur Murray Dance Studio, Cinema Ballroom, and others will give tips and moves to those who are both new and familiar with the week's dance style. Dances include salsa, disco, rock 'n' roll, country, ballroom, and world beat. At each evening there will be a local band performing tunes in the night's style, including Boogie Wonderland, the New Primitives, and Salsa del Soul.

The following evenings will feature outdoor film screenings highlighting dance styles from the previous night. Friday movies begin around 9:30 p.m. and will be screened at the St. Paul Central Public Library's Kellogg Boulevard Courtyard (90 W. Fourth St.). Movies scheduled include Urban Cowboy, Mad Hot Ballroom, Sabar, and, yes, Footloose.
