One happy family: the Guthrie's "Streetcar Named Desire"
Tonight my finicky critic's keyster will be firmly ensconsed in a seat at the Guthrie for opening night of A Streetcar Named Desire (time, perhaps, to break out the Converse One Star button-up purchased for $3 at the Warehouse District Salvation Army just blocks from the citadel of CP headquarters).

The cast includes Desperate Housewives heartthrob Ricardo Antonio Chavira as Stanley Kowalski, Gretchen Egolf as Blanche DuBois, and Twin Cities starlet Stacia Rice as Stella. It's little short of one of the best plays ever written, and we'll be heading in with high hopes for gnarly, complicated, squirm-inducing drama.

I had a chat with director John Miller-Stephany recently about the show, and what he had to say was very common sense: this is a play that you don't want to particularly mess with. It is what it is, a very particular thing, and when it's done well, it's as powerful an experience as you'll come across.

A Streetcar Named Desire runs through August 29. Tickets are priced at $24-$60 and can be purchased at 612.377.2224 or by clicking here.

And here's a short clip of the show's set in miniature:
