The limerick is an ancient poetic tradition dating back to 18th-Century Ireland. Known for its humorous (and often naughty) nature and strict format, this unpretentious form of expression has enjoyed popularity all over the world, and is a surprisingly enduring form of poetry.

In recent weeks, a petition has been circulating (over the internet, of course), asking Mayor RT Rybak to proclaim August 8, 2010 Limerick Day in Minneapolis.

Rybak has granted their wish with his own limerick.

The limerick:

Now, I, Therefore, Mayor R.T, Rybak
Do hereby proclaim with a great quack
That all honor the limerick
With nary a gimm(er)ick
But a laugh and a pint and some cut slack.

Nice.

Limerick Day will coincide with the grand party for the Twin Cities Limerick Contest. Poets are asked to send in their witty wordage by Thursday, July 29. Winners will be announced (limericks are to be judged by local celebrities) at the final celebration starting 7 p.m. Sunday, August 8 at Kieran's Irish Pub.
