Skinny jeans: Kid friendly?

• This is ridiculous!!! Skinny jeans were designed for women and strange men, not CHILDREN!!!!! We already have teenagers who are self-conscious, let's not add children to the list.

• Words are powerful, they create images. I think it potentially is a problem for young girls, in particular. We already know the affect the media and anorexic movie stars have on young people. I'm thin but not skinny. When I was a kid I would have been embarrassed if I couldn't fit in skinny jeans. I probably would have started an unhealthy diet and envied the super skinny girls. Skinny jeans are not the path to get kids to get outside and exercise - wish it were that simple. And Emily, the kid's in a Gap ad, done by a prefessional photographer, that's the "sophisticate" who picked out the camera she holds and all other props.

• I just think its awesome that the girl in the GAP ad at the top is holding a HOLGA camera. if kids these days are that sophisticated they should know better than to take their pants label too seriously.

• Okay, Jordan, but the problem is this sort of marketing does not encourage healthy weight-loss or exercise at all, really. It promotes a specific body-type that makes healthy-enough girls look at their legs and say, "These are fine, but not super-skinny." It may be taboo of me to say something like this, but my opinion is that there is an enormous weight-gap being cultivated by marketing. There is a binary in effect where one side says "eat this fast food and feel better" and the other says "skinny is never skinny enough." The thin get thinner and the overweight gain more. I don't know if I would jump on a list of people that says marketing super-skinny jeans to twelve year olds should be banned, but I think it's something that needs to be watched for a while. Poor representation of women's bodies is nothing new. Weight is a feminist issue.

• You know what's an unhealthy trend: 30% of our children are overweight and 15% obese. If the skinny jeans get a couple of kids outside to exercise, make them a part of the school uniform.
