Oh the drama, the spectacle of it all. The intensity, joy, and despair of the opera is exciting, but frequently a performance only a handful of people get to experience. Hefty ticket prices, and the perplexing foreign language of singers' stories steer new audiences away all too easily.

Enter in the Heights Theater with their opera and ballet cinema evenings. Tonight and Sunday for just $20 opera fans and first-timers alike can take in the audible art of Das Rheingold in high definition. Who can say no to opera when subtitles are guaranteed and popcorn is at your fingertips?

Tonight at 7 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the elegantly renovated Heights Theater at 39th and Central Avenue will present Das Rheingold from La Scala, starring Rene Pape, Stephan Rügamer, Johannes Martin Kraenzle, and Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperracke, conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

Composed by Germany's Richard Wagner, the movie is the first in the four-opera epic Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), which premiered in Munich in 1869. It follows the saga of the magical Rheingold stolen from its rightful owners the Rhein maidens, and the unfortunate happenings that occur to whoever possesses it thereafter.

"Das Rheingold"
Complete with dwarfs, giants, maidens, and Gods with names like Flosshilde, Alberich, and Wotan (the king of the Gods, if you didn't already know), all seem to be entranced and possibly destroyed by the treasure.

To guarantee a seat, you can pre-purchase tickets online or by calling the Heights Theater box office at 763.789.4992 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
