The hissing of summer lawns: "SlapDash" at the Fringe
Night one of the Minnesota Fringe is history. I saw three shows tonight for review in the 8/11 CP, but kept one in hand for the Dressing Room: Kelly Radermacher's SlapDash, a multimedia movement piece playing at the Ritz. It's all over the place, with all its corners probably not aligned, but I found that letting it wash over me was immensely enjoyable.

The show is about energy, how it's stored, transferred, released. The format is a series of short dance and film pieces, touching on such energy-related topics as scientific research, the petroleum industry, the family, and the unending power supply source of the sugar crystal.

It's also quite playful, with Amy Radermacher putting in a recurring appearance as a haughty scientist, video sequences walking a line between the jarring and the absurd, and a juxtaposition between an old gas station and Glenn Gould that send the mind smoldering.

The show feels as though it's come together (just) at the right time, and felt like a minor revelation. Gerry Girouard and Rebecca Abas also appear with Kelly Radermacher in a piece that pretty much justifies the price of admission.

SlapDash plays at the Ritz Theater Aug. 7 at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 11 at 10:00 p.m., Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m., and Aug. 15 at 7:00 p.m.
