Finding kid-friendly activities that don't drain your bank account can be trickier than cleaning marker off the walls. The Minneapolis Central and the Southdale libraries have come to the rescue with Childish Films: Rock and Read. This free program geared toward youngsters ages three and up is curated by Deb Girdwood and Isabelle Harder--also organizers of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival's children's films.

Rock and Read showcases short films inspired by picture books. The shorts are generally less than 10 minutes long and each program will show a handful of films. Screenings also include a pre-show activity. For example, local band Clementown will be singing original rock songs adapted from books this Saturday at Minneapolis Central Library. At Southdale Library on the September 25, staff from the Minnesota Center for Book Arts will help kids make their own pop-up book.

But what's movie and play time without a snack? Whole Foods Market has the situation under control and will provide complimentary healthy snacks. After all that, you and your kids will be ready for nap time--but you'll have to go home for that.

This fall, Childish Films will take place the third Saturday of the month at the Minneapolis Central Library and the last Saturday of the month at the Southdale Library. Visit the Library Foundation of Hennepin County for further details and updates. Future programs will include Southdale, Brookdale, and Ridgedale libraries.
