Wing Young Huie's University Avenue Project photographs for sale
Wing Young Huie's University Avenue Project has turned six miles of University Avenue's Midway area into a photography exhibit. Since May, the artist's photos have taken over windows in buildings--whether abandoned or not. The photos are portraits of people Huie has met in St. Paul, many of which show the subject holding a chalkboard with a message they've written; a sentence exposing their inner-most hopes, fears, and secrets. It's like a glimpse into their diaries and it's easy to spend a good part of the day reading them all. The University Avenue Project is coming to an end on Halloween, but it will still be possible to savor a favorite piece or two.
Huie is having an art sale this Sunday. Over 400 of the photos that were exhibited will be available for purchase, ranging from $30 to $1500. According to MPR News, money from the sales will be used toward balancing the University Avenue Project's budget. And beyond University Avenue, St. Catherine University will be hosting nightly projections of Huie's work September 9 through 30. Huie says he's also thinking about how to disseminate the University Avenue Project and others like it, possibly as mini-traveling exhibits that are affordable for K-12 schools and libraries, accompanied by educational curricula.
You can also check out the project's website for info on the regularly scheduled two-hour projections featuring photography on billboard-size screens, accompanied by recorded soundtracks from local musicians, Wednesdays through Sundays. Screenings take place at dusk and run at the project's central site at 1433 University in St. Paul.
Huie's photographs are available to purchase online, or in person this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Macalester College Alumni House. He will be available to answer questions there as well.
