Number 97: DWITT (a.k.a. David Ruddy Witt)

City: Saint Paul (Highland Park)

Years spent living in MN: 31

He may not be an actual rock star, but prolific artist DWITT (David Witt) is as close as you can get without picking up a guitar. In fact, his mere association with an event usually means you're going to have a wild and badass time. Over the years the artist has created over 400 gig posters (many of them for Triple Rock), designed all of the artwork for the notorious Zombie Pub Crawl, and founded both Squad 19 Design Collective and the Back Alley Gallery. He has even created his own holiday: International Canned Beer Month. What more can we say? It would be criminal to omit him from our list.

Name three things inspiring your work right now:

1. My wife
2. Our dog
3. Taking walks with both of them

Name three things that inspired and/or motivated you as a budding creative type:

1. The idea of drawing for a living was irresistable
2. Being my own boss
3. My inner drive compelling me to draw. It's something I have to do. If I don't, I get cranky.

What was your last big project?

Designing, printing, and assembling my wedding invitations.

What do you have going on now or coming up in the near future that should be on our radar?

My "Last Words" series of prints. I'm doing illustrations of known folks along with what is recognized as the last thing they said as a living human being. I am also working on creating a book collecting all of my black-and-white flyers.

Creative/career high point (so far)?:

Creating posters for Anthony Bourdain and Chuck Palahniuk and having them both excited to meet me.

What has been your biggest challenge as an artist?

Making ends meet is certainly a challenge, but I think everyone deals with that. As an artist, continuing to push myself to take risks and not get in a rut with my work is very hard. It's easy to keep on drawing things you know you're good at instead of taking on something brand new that has the potential to be very hard, unsuccessful, and frustrating. And at the same time, it could be a very fruitful learning experience (and still be a terrific failure). It's a necessary risk for me. Always try a new approach.

How has the local scene changed since you began your career?

There are a lot more posters artists in the Twin Cities than there used to be, and I rarely get to see any of them since we're all so busy.

Favorite comic or graphic novel:

It's hard to choose a single title, but I love anything by Will Eisner.

Favorite super hero? Villain?:

Superman is the ultimate hero. Lex Luther is a great villian.

What's your go-to beer when hanging at the bar?

Guinness, yes please.
