While serving on the executive board of the Rosemount Area Arts Council, cinema enthusiast Beth Adams organized a film festival as a way to help build and strengthen the community. It was important to her to find a way to showcase Minnesota filmmakers and, because the festival has roots in Rosemount, a city with a strong Irish heritage, it was only natural to add some Irish flair.

Three years later, Adams holds the titles of director and founder of the Shamrock Film Festival. Also serving as director at this year's festival is award-winning director Paul Bernhardt. The festival has grown and evolved since its beginnings; not only are locals encouraged to participate, but now international entries are welcome too.

New to the festival this year are workshops and seminars, including "Short Films: What Are They?" taught by producer, writer, and director Ira Livingston. E-TV (a.k.a. Eagan Television) studio supervisor Jeff Ongstad will discuss "Beyond Non-Linear Editors: A Visual Effects Workflow." Dinah screenwriter Patricia Fox will lead a workshop called "The Hook."

In keeping with the festival's goal to provide an opportunity to network within the filmmaking community and give access to resources, the Shamrock Film Festival has started bringing in guest speakers. This year organizers have invited Jason Davis, the host of On The Road with Jason Davis, who has over 40 years experience in broadcast journalism.

Award categories at the event include Best Professional Film, Best Amateur Film, Best Youth (15 or under), Best Local, Best Foreign Film, and People's Choice.

The festival runs Thursday, October 7 through Saturday, October 9. Visit The Shamrock Film Festival for
entrance rules and for the festival's schedule.
