Number 83: Amy Jo

City: Minneapolis

Years spent living in MN:
11 + summers as a kid.

As a kid in North Dakota, Amy Jo wanted to grow up to be either be a ballerina or a cowgirl. Instead, she became a prolific artist. Over the years, she has created a dazzling array of screen print posters for gigs featuring Gay Witch Abortion, Chooglin', and Mudhoney, among many others. Her fine art has also been exhibited at places like the First Amendment Gallery and the Soo Visual Art Center. Her work is often humorous, but when it's not it's rock 'n' roll at the very least. Even when you don't make it to the show, you may find yourself coveting the gig poster.

Name three things that are inspiring your work right now:

1. Vampire Bill's Track Suit
2. Zombies
3. Zen Tea

Name three things that inspired and/or motivated you as a budding creative type:

1. JCPenney Xmas catalogs
2. Corn fields
3. Punk rock

What was your last big project?

Designing the CD packaging for 89.3 The Current - Live Volume Six, their annual fundraising CD.

Creative/career high point (so far)?:

Having my posters on the sets of movies and TV shows is always a real thrill.

What has been your biggest challenge as an artist?

Finding time to be creative. There are so many other aspects of running a business that can sidetrack you--shipping orders, (Dexter, Six Feet Under) writing job quotes, (Weeds) paying bills, (Boardwalk Empire) ordering supplies, answering emails--that there seems to be little time left over to make stuff.

How has the local scene changed since you began your career?

There are a lot more poster artists and screen printers around now than when I first moved here. But it's still one big happy family (complete with dysfunctional family dinners).

What was the best music concert you have ever been to? Why?

Fugazi and Nation of Ulysses at the Fargo Elks Lodge. Growing up on a farm in North Dakota, it was like finding the holy grail.

What is your favorite bar? Favorite wine? Why?

331 Club, because it's within 2 blocks of both my house and my studio. And Tempranillo because it is fun to say and tastes delicious.
