Number 87: Rogue Citizen (Shawn Dalsen, Eric Mattheis, Matt McGorry, and Matt Wells)

City: Minneapolis

Years spent living in MN: Shit ton, YUP!

There's a reason so many bands break up just as they are on the threshold of stardom: It's very difficult to work creatively as a group. This is an obstacle that artists Rogue Citizen expertly navigate with each collaborative project they take on. Their pieces are colorful and detail-packed with things like cityscapes, weapons of destruction, tentacles, and angry skulls. This summer, the group created an epic mural on the exterior of Shuga Records, featuring a pink-haired lady, floating heads, and sea beasts fighting tidal waves. Last weekend, they painted live for WAMarchy! They've also created live works at events Red Hot Art, Art Squared, and the Phantom Tails release party. Currently the group is exhibiting solo efforts over at Never Mind Gallery (201 W. 7th St., St. Paul). You can watch them paint a spectacle for the eye in mere hours when they host a closing party for the show this Friday from 6 to 10 p.m.

Name a few things that are inspiring your work right now:

Mass public paranoia and secret ingredients.

Name some things that inspired and/or motivated you guys as a budding creative type:

We are all science fiction nerds who love to paint the abnormal. Whether it be sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll, or just plain dark we have found that we can integrate our styles to form cohesion and balance amongst our works. We are advocates of accessibility to art and very anti-institution with our work. We believe that public interaction along with creative process helps to integrate our art with the community.

What was your last big project?

We did a mural along the side of Shuga Records in Northeast Minneapolis near the corner of 13th Avenue and Second Street (by the fire station).

Creative/career high point (so far)?:

We haven't seen the the mountain as of yet, so we aren't sure what our highpoint will become. Things seem to be in perpetual motion for now.

What has been your biggest challenge as artists?

Keeping our compositions complex without making them over worked or busy. It can be hard while working in a group of four guys with four different styles. We know each of our strengths and weaknesses pretty well, but sometimes maintaining the balance becomes difficult.

How has the local scene changed since you began your career?

More acceptance for live painting at venues has been a plus. Social awareness through live painting has helped us conjure up more ideas for public interaction with art. The dialogue between the art, viewer, and artist has been vital to our collective.

Favorite music video?

"Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys.

Name your least favorite song:

There are too many to count.
