SuperGroup interprets Yves Klein at the Walker

Art comes to life with the very first brushstroke, but it does not end there. The shapes and color take on an energy of their own as they are studied and interpreted by other artists and admirers.
The Twin Cities-based dance company SuperGroup is taking interpretation to another level by creating improvisational movements inspired by the Walker Art Museum's current exhibit "Yves Klein: With the Void, Full Powers."
The four-person dance group will be in the Walker galleries 4, 5, and 6 Thursday night starting at 6 p.m., where they will use the creativity and thought behind Yves Klein's monochromatic paintings to prompt their movements and sound.
Part of the Walker initiative École de Klein, the performers will move freely throughout the exhibit space, dancing without agenda or contrived gestures, but striving to explore the life and curiosities within Klein's work.

With over 200 works in the exhibit, there is a dynamic range of pieces for the dancers to take direction from. The collection illustrates his body of work as a key moment in contemporary art history, with featured pieces like his fire paintings and iconic blue monochromes.
As a painter, sculptor, dancer, photographer, actor, etc., the pairing of free dance with Klein's artwork in the gallery space seems fitting. In addition to the improvisational dance tomorrow night, other École de Klein events include a series of lectures, gallery talks, art labs, and film from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
