This Thursday evening Intermedia Arts will open its latest multi-disciplinary event, G.A.S.P! (Gender Anarchy Sex Positivity).

In an effort to examine gender roles and sex-positive education, the collaborative happening blends visual and performance art, giving artists who are often ignored and underrepresented a space to express themselves.

Kicking off this Thursday night with a party from 5 to 10 p.m., G.A.S.P! is free and open to the public through March 5. Intermedia Arts will be hosting short educational lectures, spoken word, and visual and performance art by various local artists.

Instead of throwing a conventional opening reception with snacks and idle chatter, Intermedia Arts is going one step further by inviting community resource organizations and sex-ed supporters such as the Twin Cities Avengers, the Trans Youth Support Group educators, and Smitten Kitten's Coalition Against Toxic Toys to share ideas and information.

Up-and-coming independent hip-hop artist Heidi Barton Stink will also be in attendance Thursday night. Stink is an MC who has performed across the nation, as well as at local events such as Hip Hop Against Homophobia. Her work focuses on social injustice and trans and queer rights. Stink will close out the opening reception with a dynamic performance of works from her EP and upcoming debut album.

Other featured talent includes local mixed-media artist and event organizer Sarah M. Sosa, who uses recycled materials to explore social themes such as the commodification of women. Ellen Stag's photography will also be on display. An internationally renowned artist, she will be showing photographs of genderqueer and trans models. Local artist Nicholas Schaffer uses his art to investigate body image, gender identity, and emotional dissonance within the self.
