Little Red Riding Hood meets Goldilocks at the Ritz Theater

When it comes to the characters of childhood fairy tales, their unfortunate encounters with big bad wolves and the like are so well known that creating a fresh new theatrical experience takes some creative effort.

The newest production by the Ballet of the Dolls at the Ritz Theater in Northeast Minneapolis attempts to do just that by taking a contemporary look at the narratives of Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood, and the escapades that ensue when the two girls actually cross paths.

Choreographer Myron Johnson decided to create a mash-up of these two popular fairy tales to entertain audience members of all ages. The Ballet of the Dolls has earned a stunning reputation with their fearless and thought-provoking dances. Their new work, Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks, will be no different.

According to Johnson the production is not bawdy or kitschy, but rather sweet, simple, and theatrical. By using classical music throughout, Johnson has created a Fantasia-like feel, reminding him--and hopefully audiences--of ballets from childhood, like Peter and the Wolf or Carnival of the Animals.

The performance places Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks in the same tale, where moments such as Goldy stealing Little Red's basket meant for Grandma, or the Big Bad Wolf searching for Red in the Three Bears' house, are sure to amuse adults and children alike.

The show opens tomorrow night, Thursday, February 10, at 7 p.m., and will run through the end of this month. Tickets range from $12 to $25, depending on your age or location (Northeast residents get in for $20), and are available online.

The show is fun to watch - and less than an hour long.
