Making out: Six cozy spots to lock lips

It's difficult to resist the urge to cuddle with someone during these frigid winter nights--and who says you should? Melt the frost on your windows by steaming them up. Or better yet, ditch your make-out mobile until summertime and try out these cozy indoor necking nooks.

W.A. Frost

(374 Selby Avenue, St. Paul; 651.224.5715. Open daily at 4 p.m.)

The basement lounge is dimly lit, so be sure to get a table in one of the even darker corners or at one of the tables set in the hidden stone alcoves. And while the fireplace seats may look enticing, they are also more exposed. Don't worry--if all goes well, you'll be making your own heat anyway.

The Como Conservatory
(1225 Estabrook Dr., St. Paul; 651.487.8200. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (winter hours))

For those looking to spice up their love life with role playing, we suggest trying a Tarzan-and-Jane-themed make-out at Como Park's Tropical Encounters garden. Como Conservatory recommends exploring the relationships between plants and animals here, but we're sure there are other things to explore as well. But we're not condoning finding cover under giant, green-leafed plants. There are plenty of benches for sitting along the paths. Just remember to wear green clothes. And don't frighten Chloe the sloth.

The Local
(931 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis; 612.904.1000. Open weekdays 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., weekends 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.)

The Local is notorious for selling the most Jameson Irish Whiskey in the world. Knowing this, it's hard to believe there isn't a line outside of the kissing room. According to the Local's website, this back room "was a broom closet until ideas were exchanged to the contrary." The room can be reserved, but for a spontaneous kissing encounter, the red swinging doors are never locked and, to maximize privacy, the two red lamps are barely bright enough to define the small space. Plus, the couch is cozy, and that's all that really matters.

Kieran's Irish Pub
(601 First Ave. N., Minneapolis; 612.339.4499. Open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m., and open at 10 a.m. for any noon Twins game.)

There are two "snugs" at this Irish pub and each one has a name: Pretty and Handsome. They're meant as private party rooms for groups of no more than 15 people. But who says there should only be two people around for making out? This would be the perfect place to throw a Valentine's Day party. Each room has a velvet curtain to shut out the clamor of patrons when your event turns into a makeout party. Another perk? Each room has its own window looking out onto the bar's back, so when you come up for air you can also order a refill.

Prohibition
(821 Marquette Ave., Minneapolis; 612.215.3700. Open Mondays through Wednesday from 5 p.m. to midnight, Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.)

If your prefer a makeout session to be more of an exhibition, visit the bed at Prohibition. The 27th floor of the Foshay Tower offers grand views of downtown Minneapolis, but it's also a great place to be when all you want to do is keep your eyes closed. There are plenty of places to hide away for more pecking privacy, but the bar's most daring seat isn't a seat at all, but a cushioned area about the size of a queen-size bed. You'll strike intrigue in the hearts of people walking out of the elevator, but the bed is tucked just enough into the woodwork so that they won't get the whole story, especially on a busy night when servers will inevitably block the view. It's right by the bar, but you'll likely forget until it's time to rehydrate.

IKEA
(8000 IKEA Way, Bloomington; 952.858.8088. Winter Hours: Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Been there, done all that? Well done! For those of you who need more of a makeout adventure, try showing IKEA's bedroom displays a better time than the boring folks who only gingerly sit in them do. Our favorite is the circle bed, where you can position yourself like the hands of a clock and kiss the hours away.
