"In a world of chickens, there can be only one top cock on the block."

This Friday night, local animator Greg Bro (Bro-iest. Name. Ever) premieres his animated short, A Cock Tale at the Suburban World Theatre in Uptown Minneapolis.

"It's about two roosters on a farm, and one is in the shadow of the other," says Bro about the plot of his film. "It's just like when you have something you want in life, whether it's a job, a pretty girl, or an iPad, but there's something, or someone in your way. In this case, the thing in the way just happens to be a cock."

According to his website www.thebroshow.com (Bro-iest. Domain. Ever.), the story revolves around two characters with all the makings of a classic American rivalry: Brock, a rooster with rippling abs, a low IQ, and plenty of charisma, and Todd, a smaller rooster with seven fanny packs, an addiction to juice boxes, and an unhealthy amount of chicken porn.

The 11-minute film will be screened four times during the party, which runs from 7 to 9 p.m. (screenings are at 7:15, 7:45, 8:15, 8:45). It's free to attend, and the event will also feature illustrations and back-story on the characters from the animator.

"It's going to be fun," Bro says about the screening. "I'll probably talk a little bit, and then people can just walk around, look at illustrations, and drink beer. I guess that's what people do at these things, right? And it's free, so who cares?"

The culmination of several years of work, Bro says that the inspiration for the animated short initially came from a doodle of a rooster thrusting pregnancy into a chicken (Get it? It came from a rooster doodle! Ah, word play), and combines hand-drawn animation with digital effects.

"I worked on this thing alone, and it felt like an unending process sometimes," says Bro. "But now that it's done I'm excited to start showing it off. It's been a very gratifying experience."

In addition to the big premiere in Minneapolis, Bro is taking his cocks on the road this April.

"I decided to enter it into the L.A. Comedy Shorts Film Festival and it got accepted, so I'm heading out there next month. I don't know if I'll win anything, but it's a pretty huge honor to be included."

Regardless of whether or not A Cock Tale is his road to fame, Bro looks forward to sharing his film with animation enthusiasts, comedy fans, and people who like free events alike.

"If you like Golden Girls, M. Night Shymalan, Hope Floats, and Cop and a Half, you'll love this film. It's exactly like all of those things--except not at all."
