Things are looking dire for the Southern Theater, an institution 101 years in the making. Last week, it was announced that that the organization needs to raise $400,000 by the end of the month in order to continue its existence. This week, the Southern has released a statement that even if funds are raised in time, certain performances slated for 2011 will have to go, regardless.

The list of canceled shows includes two concerts and three performances: modern chamber group ICE, musicians Shara Worden with yMusic, independent dance celebration Tandem, experimental performer Johannes Wieland, and drag performance artist Mx. Justin Vivian Bond. Events still scheduled include Accordo, Momentum, and a collection of short plays inspired by steampunk culture featuring Hardcover Theater, English Scrimshaw Theatrical Novelties, and Upright Egg.

Patrons interested in donating funds in order to keep the theater afloat can celebrate the space this Saturday night at its yearly benefit party. Guests will enjoy 10-minute excerpts from productions by Ananya Dance Theatre and Hardcover Theater, plus music performances from Mayda, Grant Cutler, and Adam Levy. There will also be wine and appetizers, silent and live auctions, and the notorious cakewalk, where contestants compete for sweets to take home. Tickets to the fundraiser are $125. The party begins at 6:30 p.m.

Can't make it out on Saturday? The theater is also taking donations online.
