50 Reasons Minnesota is the best state in America

Thanks, we're happy to be here
Bratty gossip site Gawker is counting down the 50 Worst States in America and last week named Minnesota the 45th Worst.

That actually makes us the 6th Best, which isn't half bad, except that it's the blog equivalent of "damning with faint praise."

Big surprise: Gawker chose New York as the Best--relying on nepotism over logic and reminding us of all the times the Yankees beat the Twins.

But Gawker's evaluation was clearly performed by someone who never actually visited Minnesota--at best, they shopped at Mall of America during a layover between LA and NYC. Those of us who live here can tell you quite a few more advantages to living in flyover country (including: "no earthquakes").

Here are 50 Reasons Minnesota is the Best State in America. Feel free to add your own in the comments.

41. We've got famous drag queens: Several top contestants from RuPaul's Drag race got their start in Minnesota at the Gay 90s (Manila Luzon and season one winner BeBe Zahara Benet).

40. The Triple Rock Social Club -- for music itinerary and menu alike.

39. We're the birthplace of the original Zombie Pub Crawl.

38. Nationally renowned artists Alec Soth and Wing Young Huie are from Minnesota.

37. We excel at relaxing: everyone has a cabin at the lake.

36. Our huge selection of quality locally-made ice cream--Sebastian Joe's, Pumphouse Creamery, Izzy's, Crema Cafe, Grand Ole Creamery--probably beats every major city in the U.S.

35. We have the best, most plentiful cross-country ski trails of any urban area in the nation.

34. It's not too expensive to live here, and with 20 Fortune 500 companies in the state, there are also plenty of jobs.

I think you meant to say why The Cities is best. Nothing about anything really important like the North Shore, Polaris, Arctic Cat, Headwaters of the Mississippi, Paul Bunyan, and so much more.

I'm glad people from NY or Cali don't realize this is where it's at!

Minneapolis got buses, one train that takes you from downtown Minnespolis to the Mall Of America and tons of cabs.

I like Minneapolis because of the education system it's a woman and kid state they got tons of government services and resources. I also like the cultural diversity and the landscapes. The Mall of America in Bloomington, MN is too cool and so is Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. The people are friendly and they got so many people there from all over the world like Whites, Blacks, Hmongs, Native Americans, Indians, people from the caribbean and a whole lot of Somalians. Downtown Minneapolis also have skyline which I love and is very beautiful because in the winter time you can go outside and walk through the skyline your outside but yet inside as well it is so cool and very little crime.

Chicago is culturally diverse but very segregated at the Moment. They trying there best to gentrify the place.

Minneapolis help you with everything thing from getting into a shelter and getting housing to getting an education and a job and cheaper cost of living than chicago.

Chicago got a mass transit system which is just about the only thing they got on Minneapolis.

Chicago got buses, pace, taxi, metra train and L line trains.

I like Chicago because I was born and raised there and we got a lot to do here and our city is big and a tourist attraction. plus we have one of the best downtown's ever. The crime is bad the education is ok depending on where you live the hospitals are great and the housing authority here sucks. The cultural diversity is ok we got people from all walks of life here also, but they all live on the Northside of the city especially in Rogers Park.

Chicago helps with getting an education but a job and housing is hard to come by here cause we got so many people here and a lot of more to come. The housing authority still got there wait list for section 8 and public housing closed in 2012 but Minnesota still help out with public housing. Hopefully Chicago open up as well we got a lot of new mixed income housing popping up everywhere that can't nobody afford not to mention the gentrification that's going on here. Most of the ares that's becoming integrated is Rogers Park, Humboldt Park, Hyde Park, Uptown, Lincoln Park and Edgewater.

"Everyone has a cabin.." Yeah, everyone...nice try.

Also, the lightrail? Are you kidding me???? That has to be one of the most god awful transit systems in the US.

No mention of the whole "State of hockey" thing?  Fail. We put out the most professional and college hockey players in the entire country.  We are also home to the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine with the most enclosed rinks in the country, and I don't know if it's true or not, but the complex that the rink is on also at one time had the most soccer fields in one location in the country.  The USA Cup for soccer players is a HUGE deal.  People come from around the world to play in it

And about 98% of this list is why the Twin Cities are great.  No other state has Northern Minnesota (and I don't mean St. Cloud).  North of MN HWY 2 is where its really at.

Is this supposed to be about Minnesota as a state? Or just the Twin Cities area?? Some other things that should make the list are; Eel Pout Fest, Duluth, Lake of the Woods, BWCA, mining and logging just to name a few. Your list sounds like you've never been North of St. Cloud! Which makes you more Iowan than a Minnesotan!!

Diablo Cody is from Illinois... her third job after graduating from the University of Iowa finally brought her to the twin Cities... for a short amount of time. But not education or growing up happened there. I don't find that claim legitimate but most are decent.

The MN Renaissance Festival is the longest running Renn Fest in the US.  it has the highest attendance in the midwest and is the 2nd largest in the nation (2nd to TX).Also, the Animal Humane Society (in MN) hosts the Walk for Animals every spring- it is the largest animal walk in the nation and over 10,000 people and 7,000 pets show up every year to raise $1million

I love Minnesota, but not for most of the reasons on this list.  I guess it must be the top reasons gay people like Minnesota.

Being a great place to be gay is NOT a reason to love MN. I think that is the only reason to hate MN.

@Jeremy I agree haha

Seriously? No mention of hockey at all? Minnesota, home of the Golden Gophers, Bulldogs, Beavers, Huskies, and Mavericks? How about the North Stars and Wild? And the crown jewel of all high-school sporting events, the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tourney, with a tradition reaching back a hundred years to the days of the Eveleth dynasty? What about being the state of 10,000 rinks? A critical omission like that makes this list mean nothing.

Great for shopping ( mall of America) excellent outdoor places, superb lakes (especially lake superior) nice restaurants, incredible walking and biking paths, even that many people hates the cold winter I really enjoy all the fun stuff you can do even if outside is freezing, I love the fact that Minnespolis is well know for their cultural events, many plays on their many theatres.

There are too many Minnesotans posting here who have never left or plan never to leave the state and think MN is the best thing since white bread....which coincidentally, there;s plenty of that here, too.  The number one reason should be passive-aggressiveness.  LOL

If you guys consider yourself the "hipster state", isn't being the best state in the US a bit too mainstream?

Oh, and North Dakota could whoop your guys' asses.
