50 Reasons Minnesota is the best state in America

10. We're a nationwide hub for indie hip-hop.

9. We have the Mall of America and laid down the first-ever indoor mall (Southdale).

8. Minneapolis is a great place to be gay.

Minnesota local beers: Brewed with the water from 10,000 lakes
7. We've got great a great tradition of local brewing, even beyond Summit and Surly. As Kanye might say: "I'm about to go HAMM's!"

6. We have our own sound, pioneered by Prince, Janet Jackson, Morris Day & The Time, Sheila E., and two of the world's best producers (Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis).

5. Our summers are packed with festivals

4. We host one of the best -- and most historic -- rock venues in the world, First Avenue.

3. We gave the nation two GOP candidates for president and wouldn't vote for either of them.

2. With 11,000 lakes (we're too modest in our state slogan), Minnesota has more shoreline than California, Hawaii and Florida combined.

1. We survive snow storms that can destroy stadiums, and unlike New Yorkers, we actually go out and shovel our neighbors' walk instead of whining all day on Twitter.

Minnesota has to be the laughingstock of the United States.

Minnesota is full of obnoxious jerks who think that Minnesota is the best place to live in the world. I beg to differ... I've lived here my entire life, and I hate it!!! Nothing to do, expensive, etc. The "natives" that are proud to boast that they're from Minnesota need a reality check. I would love to know how many people can hardly wait to move to Minnesota; there's some serious self delusion at work here!!!

I've got one question that will anwser this debate. If mn is soooooooooooooooo great its not by the way . Why then when you type the question why do minnesotans suck on google do 10 web pages people count em 10 pages at least solid of sites devoted to hating this shit hole why people why is it so good again?

I have lived in many places on this planet. Never have I been made to feel so unwelcome as I have here.

As soon as I can, I will be leaving this xenophobic, clique-haven with ugly, horsefaced, man-hating women. Fuck Minnesota, fuck the nasty, stupid people that live here.

It's expensive and if you don't have a car, you're SOL in this state. Then when it comes to number one, what else are we suppose to do? We need to leave our homes. If you are into outdoor activities or sports, probably great great state for you. I'm not.

#34: "It's not too expensive to live here..."

I'm sorry but Minnesota is very expensive. I've lived in eight different states and Minnesota is the most expensive (and of the other seven only California is close). Gas, power, groceries- everything costs more here.

Please don't bitch about the minutia before you come try out England. Then you understand minutia, very minute minutia ( London not included, its about as English as New York is American)

You don't have to convince me, a Brit married to a Minnesotan, I just came back from 3 weeks there. Every time I do I mourn the niceness, the simpleness, the coolness that is minnesota. The seasons are predictable and magical. The people are happy and chill ( on the whole). We're moving there soon and there is nowhere in the world that would take me away from where I currently live except minnesota.... Wha wha wha wha wha minnesota style.

I've been through most of the Midwest. MN really is better than most parts of this region.

The numerous articles about how MN is #1 read like the insecure girl having to be told over and over how pretty she is.

Seems like a lot of the City Pages posts have to do with why MN is awesome. If it is so great, why does it need validation nationally all the time? -Wisconsin transplant who has lived here a long time and doesn't care what anyone thinks and still lives here

I think reason #18 and #3 tie for the best reasons why we're best.

If someone says something negative about the beautiful state of Minnesota they either have never been, they were here in the wrong place or at the wrong time or they are not a nature person.

One more reason Minnesota is a great state is because our Professional Women's Basketball team won the championships in 2011 and 2nd in 2012.

Minnesota is a great state because of how we allow people to be who the want to be and how Minnesotans stay true to their roots.

I think you meant to say why The Cities is best. Nothing about anything really important like the North Shore, Polaris, Arctic Cat, Headwaters of the Mississippi, Paul Bunyan, and so much more.

I'm glad people from NY or Cali don't realize this is where it's at!

Minneapolis got buses, one train that takes you from downtown Minnespolis to the Mall Of America and tons of cabs.

I like Minneapolis because of the education system it's a woman and kid state they got tons of government services and resources. I also like the cultural diversity and the landscapes. The Mall of America in Bloomington, MN is too cool and so is Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. The people are friendly and they got so many people there from all over the world like Whites, Blacks, Hmongs, Native Americans, Indians, people from the caribbean and a whole lot of Somalians. Downtown Minneapolis also have skyline which I love and is very beautiful because in the winter time you can go outside and walk through the skyline your outside but yet inside as well it is so cool and very little crime.

Chicago is culturally diverse but very segregated at the Moment. They trying there best to gentrify the place.

Minneapolis help you with everything thing from getting into a shelter and getting housing to getting an education and a job and cheaper cost of living than chicago.

Chicago got a mass transit system which is just about the only thing they got on Minneapolis.

Chicago got buses, pace, taxi, metra train and L line trains.

I like Chicago because I was born and raised there and we got a lot to do here and our city is big and a tourist attraction. plus we have one of the best downtown's ever. The crime is bad the education is ok depending on where you live the hospitals are great and the housing authority here sucks. The cultural diversity is ok we got people from all walks of life here also, but they all live on the Northside of the city especially in Rogers Park.

Chicago helps with getting an education but a job and housing is hard to come by here cause we got so many people here and a lot of more to come. The housing authority still got there wait list for section 8 and public housing closed in 2012 but Minnesota still help out with public housing. Hopefully Chicago open up as well we got a lot of new mixed income housing popping up everywhere that can't nobody afford not to mention the gentrification that's going on here. Most of the ares that's becoming integrated is Rogers Park, Humboldt Park, Hyde Park, Uptown, Lincoln Park and Edgewater.

Obama really loves MN! He personally replied to an Ely man who requested a letter for their new 50-year time capsule!

"Everyone has a cabin.." Yeah, everyone...nice try.

Also, the lightrail? Are you kidding me???? That has to be one of the most god awful transit systems in the US.

No mention of the whole "State of hockey" thing?  Fail. We put out the most professional and college hockey players in the entire country.  We are also home to the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine with the most enclosed rinks in the country, and I don't know if it's true or not, but the complex that the rink is on also at one time had the most soccer fields in one location in the country.  The USA Cup for soccer players is a HUGE deal.  People come from around the world to play in it

And about 98% of this list is why the Twin Cities are great.  No other state has Northern Minnesota (and I don't mean St. Cloud).  North of MN HWY 2 is where its really at.

Fatony4u
Fatony4u

Is this supposed to be about Minnesota as a state? Or just the Twin Cities area?? Some other things that should make the list are; Eel Pout Fest, Duluth, Lake of the Woods, BWCA, mining and logging just to name a few. Your list sounds like you've never been North of St. Cloud! Which makes you more Iowan than a Minnesotan!!

Sajohnson22

Diablo Cody is from Illinois... her third job after graduating from the University of Iowa finally brought her to the twin Cities... for a short amount of time. But not education or growing up happened there. I don't find that claim legitimate but most are decent.

@Ben Bakunin I used to live in Denver. Horrible traffic and unfriendly people who spend every waking hour of every day obsessing over a stupid football team. There are more important things in the world than the Donkeys.

@queennisia1 For so much talk about our education system, you certainly don't appear to have taken advantage of it; the grammar, spelling, and lack of punctuation in your 4 posts make you seem borderline illiterate.

@a.little Hi, yes he did didn't he? but did you stop to think for a moment that their are much greater things going on in the world that need taking care of? I think the Ely man who requested a letter from Obama can wait a little bit more until Obama is impeached. Obama needs to stop golfing and making disgusting insolent videos, and to step up to the plate and discuss the real issue terrorism and the slaughtering of Christians, by MUSLIMS, there I am not afraid to say it, but it seems as though he is.
