Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures that Minnesota has had lately, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival is set to begin in less than three weeks. During that time, the city will turn into a winter wonderland, with special sporting events, snow and ice sculpting contests, outdoor beer parties, a torchlight parade, and other happenings around town.

The huge sprawling festival hasn't gone unnoticed outside of the Twin Cities; National Geographic Traveler recently named it the fourth best winter carnival in the world.

The short blurb on the event explains Winter Carnival history of how it began after a reporter wrote that St. Paul was "another Siberia, unfit for human habitation in the winter." In 1886, residents responded with an epic snow party, and have continued to do so for 125 years.

Beating out our festival on the top 10 list is Canada's Winterlude Festival (in Ottawa, Ontario), New York's Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, and the curiously named Fur Rendezvous (Anchorage, Alaska) takes the top spot. New Hampshire, Colorado, and Sapporo, Japan were cities that also had festivals that made the cut.

To see the complete list, visit National Geographic's website. The 126 Annual Saint Paul Winter Carnival runs January 26 through February 5. More info on the celebration can be found on the official website, www.winter-carnival.com.
