This weekend, the place to be is Bryant-Lake Bowl, where
Wheel Sexy Cabaret will be celebrating the bicycling body -- which comes in all shapes and sizes -- in an evening of arty, alternative, bike-themed entertainment. Bikes, burlesque, comedy, and live music -- what's not to like?
The MC for evening will be Retro Spectacle, a local actress who was recently turned on to the world of burlesque. She decided to team up with performer Au NaturElle to put together a bike-themed show.
In December, the two collaborators invited burlesque performers and cycling advocates to meet up to talk about how to move forward with the project. That January, they threw out a wide net to gather bike enthusiasts (no stage experience was necessary), and anyone who was interested in burlesque. Responses came from both community members and professional performers.
While in the planning stages, Retro Spectacle and Au NaturElle hosted two open brainstorming sessions at the Minnehaha Free Space to discuss "what is burlesque?" and "what does it mean to be a cyclist?" They also tested the waters with a preview performance. Another performance was held at the the Ice-CYCLES shanty at the Art Shanties on Medicine Lake.

"Our goal is to celebrate the bicycling body," Retro Spectacle says, "both the individual bodies that transport us, and the community of cyclists who sustain us. If you ride a bike, we're here to tell you that you're 'Wheel Sexy,' regardless of your frame type, sexual orientation, gender expression, or level of cycling experience."
This weekend's show includes music by Smoking with Baby, an experimental-jazz duo who represent a music collective called Second Hand Opera. For this performance, they've built wind chimes out of bike frames and are playing bike wheels and bike bells.
Also performing will be Mad King Thomas, the post-modern, post-feminist dance group who are always entertaining, tantalizing, and thought-provoking, plus the wonderful AcroYogaMPLS, a remarkable group of acrobats who can contort their bodies into all sorts of positions.
