Downtown St. Paul Macy's to close this spring, Minnetonka stores consolidated

It's the end of an era. For the first time in about 130 years, downtown St. Paul will be without a department store. Macy's confirmed the rumors today that it will be closing its downtown store early this spring.
According to a press release on Macy's website, six locations will be closing early spring 2013, including stores in Honolulu, Pasadena, and Houston. The Ridgedale Center stores in Minnetonka will also be facing change. They will be closing in June as construction will begin on consolidating the two stores into one larger retail space.
The decision regarding the downtown St. Paul location comes as no surprise to many, as the business's 10-year contract with the city to remain open ended in 2012. The store has 153 employees.
Despite its prime real estate, and easy Sky Way access, some folks felt that the downtown location was sliding in quality. Over the years, the Lowertown St. Paul neighborhood as attracted more residents and revelers with its expanding farmers' market, nightclubs, performance venues, and restaurant and bar scene. Meanwhile Macy's, just a few blocks from the hopping area, was often a dead zone.
Folks looking to eat at the department's restaurant or find one last killer piece of clothing will be able to shop at the store's final clearance sale, which begins on Monday, January 7, and will run until the doors close, sometime early March. Macy's has been at Sixth and Wabasha location for 50 years (if you include its time as Dayton's).
