Artists and city planners team up for the Creative Citymaking Project

Creative Citymaking is one of three initiatives funded through $1 million received from Artplace America. The other projects include grants for the Arts on Chicago placemaking project headed up by Pillsbury House + Theatre, and the American Indian Cultural Corridor with the Native American Community Development Institute. Intermedia Arts was awarded $325,000 for Creative Citymaking, which supplements additional funding from the city for the project.
According to Theresa Sweetland, Intermedia has done a great deal of work supporting agents for change in the community. "Their role is not just as makers and producers, but also innovators and thinkers and changemakers," she says. The Citymaking project "draws on Intermedia Arts' long history of supporting change making artists, and the brings attention to the issues and experiences of underrepresented communities."
Intermedia Arts has been pioneering creative placemaking and community development for two decades. "Over the last 20 years, we've been working on supporting a connection between art and other aspects of civic and community life," she says.
The Citymaking project involves folding artists into the process of long-range planning for Minneapolis, in hopes of "bringing together artists and city departments to explore creative ideas for addressing city problems," Sweetland says.

The projects include a north Minneapolis project headed up by city planner Jim Voll with artists Ashley Hanson and Wing Young Huie; a project around the Southwest LRT with city planners Beth Elliott and Paul Mogush and artist Diane Willow; projects based in Linden Hills and Dinkytown with city planners Haila Maze and Brian Schaffer with artists Caroline Kent, Roger Cummings, and Samuel Ero-Phillips; and a capstone evaluation for the city's 10-year historic survey efforts with city planner Joe Bernard and artist Witt Siasoco.
