Loner V-Day: Things to do that don't involve crying in the dark

Go to the movies

For some reason there's a weird stigma when it comes to attending the movies alone. But why? Do you really need so sit next to someone you know while watching a flick in the dark? It's actually a pretty great way to kill a few hours alone. If you're looking to get a little ironic this Valentine's Day, the Theatres at Mall of America will be screening the cinematic horror gem My Bloody Valentine for $5 at 7:30 p.m.

Protest

Get political and get involved. This Thursday, folks will be gathering in Powderhorn Park (3400 15th Ave. S., Minneapolis) for One Billion Rising to End Violence Against Women. This event kicks off with a march, followed by live music, keynote addresses from activists, hot beverages and food, and a dance from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Take a road trip

Looking for a love-free adventure? Walker, Minnesota is currently hosting its annual Eelpout Festival. It's basically a bunch of insane people doing weird stuff in the freezing cold. There will be ice fishing, binge drinking, midget wrestling, a frozen T-shirt contest, and more. Oh, and lots of people will be kissing fish. Seriously.

Drink

A lot of bars and restaurants are going to be angling for lovebirds' wallets. However, like any other day, dive bars just want to get you drunk. No romance here. Grab some single friends and hit up a bar like the Red Dragon (great jukebox, strong drinks), Mortimer's (they have fooseball), the Vegas Lounge (awesome karaoke), Lee's Liquor Lounge (happy hour is pretty much every hour there), or the Lyn-Lake VFW (karaoke and pulltabs!). None of these places are sexy, but they are hella fun. Not into dive bars? Sports bars are also generally a love-free zone. Try Mac's Industrial Sports Bar, Skinner's Pub & Eatery, Burger Moe's, or a Buffalo Wild Wings.
