Forget the era when MTV played music videos. It's long dead. Remember back when the station would occasionally air thought-provoking documentaries and specials in-between Liquid Television and House of Style? MTV appears to be revisiting that time period with Rebel Music, a series examining how youth living in volatile areas of the world are finding their voice through music, performance, and visual arts. Nusrat Durrani and graphic designer/street artist Shepard Fairey (Obey) served as executive producers for the series, and filmmaker Ross Kauffman (Born Into Brothels) was a consulting producer.

Local photographer (and former City Pages assistant web editor) Rebecca McDonald worked on the project as well as associate producer. She will be discussing her experiences at a panel talk and screening tonight.

The series is comprised of six 30-minute shows. Each segment examines political and artistic activism in a different country, including Mexico, Mali, Afghanistan, Israel/Palestine, India, and Egypt, where the crew was onsite during Arab Spring protests. Throughout the project, creative youth discuss the impact of social media, protest songs, and finding their voices during times of political unrest. Subjects include a female rapper, a heavy metal band, and other creative types.

"As a fan of musicians like the Clash, Public Enemy, Bob Marley, and Rage Against the Machine, I am a huge believer in the power of art and music to serve as platforms for social and political commentary," says Fairey. "Rebel Music mirrors the approach and philosophy I've embraced throughout my entire career -- art as a catalyst for social change."

The first two episodes (Egypt and Afghanistan) airs tonight on MTVu at 8 p.m. Folks interested in hearing a little more about the show and discussing some of the ideas explored in the project can take in a panel talk with McDonald tonight at St. Catherine's University.
