While some filmmakers struggle to get distribution and funding, Diablo Cody's latest project had enough buzz to merit a bidding war. The hot ticket, Ricki and Flash, was bid on by top studios including Universal and Fox, but eventually Columbia TriStar won out. The film already has Meryl Streep attached to star, and Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs, Rachel Getting Married) is set to direct.
Cody has been tweeting about the deal this afternoon, and has joked about it being an April Fools' stunt (nope, the deal is very real):
Cody's script follows an aging rock star (Streep) as she tries to get her life together and patch things up with her estranged adult children, one of whom is going through a volatile divorce.
Streep has been on a winning streak (when isn't she?) this awards season with August: Osage County, which netted her a slew of accolades, including an Oscar nomination. Meanwhile, Cody's most recent effort, Paradise, marked her first directorial debut. Also on her plate is the script for a musical film based on the Sweet Valley High book series, which sounds like it could end up being either a complete train wreck or the best movie to watch drunk with your girlfriends ever.
