Halloween has finally arrived! But you know what? It's also Friday, and that means everywhere is going to be packed to the brim with people in huge costumes, it's cold, and maybe it would just be more fun to settle in at home with a heaping bowl of candy or popcorn (no candy corn, please) and watch a movie or two tonight. Here are our suggestions from Amazon Prime for making this a Halloweekend of binge watching.

Every year, in a rush to sell easy costumes, Halloween shops release a few doozies to the market. Once again, we've searched the internet for some of the weirdest getups out there. We've got some not-so-sexy looks, some things in bad taste, costumes that mostly make no sense, and really weird mashups. If you're looking for what not to wear this season, here's a list of suggestions.

Three Shows You Should See at the Twin Cities Horror Festival

Categories: Halloween, Theater

There's always talk this time of year of why people flock to scary movies and put Stephen King atop bestseller lists. The answer is simple: Being scared is fun, especially when we know that the threat isn't real.

The third Twin Cities Horror Festival brings these visceral delights to the stage through Sunday. It features work by nine local companies, with each tackling terror and tension in their own way. As with any festival, the event (at the already haunted Southern Theater) offers a mixed bag in quality. My three favorites:

Halloween is almost here, and with it comes annual traditions. Some will be going out to costume parties and others will be taking their little ones trick-or-treating. Regardless of what you do this spooky week, taking in at least one horror flick is highly recommended, whether it's a gruesome tale, a campy excursion, or a big monster movie.

This week, we'll be offering a few recommendations, starting with what's available on live streaming on Netflix. Don't use the service? We'll be offering a variety of movies worth your time on Hulu and Amazon Prime later this week as well.

Last Saturday night, zombies wandered into downtown Minneapolis. There were brain-eating contests featuring pros, plentiful amounts of beer, and live music from the likes of Prof, Juicy J, and Steve Aoki.

While some zombies simply covered themselves in black eye shadow or fake blood, others went all out, putting time and effort into their looks. The following is a shout-out to the zombies with the most creative, gross, and neat looks. All photos are by Mike Madison.

The 20 Best Vampire Movies, 1979 to the Present

Categories: Halloween

Our review of this week's Dracula Untold doesn't inspire much hope: "This Dracula Begins-style sword-and-fangs curio plays like someone said, 'What if we took a vampire flick but did a find-and-replace swapping out all that bare-neck sensuality for some video-game ass-kicking?'"

But for every genre-entry failure, there are numerous other modern vampire movies that manage to plumb and toy with the creature's mythology in imaginative ways. The breadth of the directors featured in our slideshow -- from French auteur Claire Denis to Germany's Werner Herzog to American mavericks Jim Jarmusch and Francis Ford Coppola -- speaks to the wide variety of voices that have tackled the genre with such ingenuity in recent decades. -- Danny King

She was right.

It was an unpleasantly cold Friday night for the official opening of Haunted Basement: Unhinged. Now in its eighth year, the Soap Factory's Halloween thrill experiment has a reputation for being the most terrifying haunted house in town, and for good reason. It's an adults-only experience, with waivers, and dress codes, and safe words -- all serious stuff.
