Three unique 5Ks: Rave, quest, and mud towards the finish line

Categories: Running
It seems like you can turn anything into a 5K these days.

This Friday night, thousands of runners and walkers from all over the Twin Cities will put on their finest neon apparel and glow sticks for the Rave Run out at Valley Fair. Described by organizers as "candy for your eyes and ears," the event is just as much a party as it is a race, with music and light stations at every turn.

Raving isn't the only way to get your butt in gear this summer. Here are three races that for people who hate the idea of running down the road without anyone throwing mud, sweat, or glow sticks in their general direction. Check it.

The Color Run [SLIDESHOW]

In just over a month, the Minnesota State Fairgrounds will attract the most colorful folks from all over the state during the Minnesota State Fair (and by "colorful" we mean in a socks-and-sandals/terrible ICP tattoos kind of way). This past weekend, however, a different type of colorful event took over the fairgrounds as the Color Run 5K made its first-ever appearance in the Twin Cities.

Attention zombies: we need to chat.

This weekend, thousands of you will descend on Spring Creek Motocross in Millville for the Run for Your Lives 5K, where your job will be to snatch the brains out of runners who are brave enough to take on the obstacle course.

And yes, while we realize that "officially" all you'll be attempting to do is capture the "health flags" that participants will have tied around their waists while they attempt to elude you and reach the finish line/safe-zone, there's no reason why you, the zombie nation, should be at any sort of a disadvantage against the slightly more able-bodied, living runners. That's why in preparation of this weekend's apocalypse, we've decided to bequeath our wealth of zombie knowledge upon you, so that you can rack up the body count this Saturday.

It's wild what people will pay to do to themselves.

This Saturday and Sunday, thousands of folks will descend on Somerset Amphitheater for the Tough Mudder, a 12-mile obstacle course designed by the British Special Forces. The event, which costs upwards of $150 to be a part of, includes something called the "Arctic Enema," where participants swim through a giant pool of ice cubes, along with an obstacle knows as "Electroshock Therapy" that features a field of live electrical wires carrying up to 10,000 volts of electricity.

While the Tough Mudder may not be everyone's thing (we'll be spending the day drinking and LOL-ing at your Facebook status updates instead), this summer there are a number of unique road races and fun runs happening all over the state that are perfect for any skill level or taste. To help you pick the one that's right for you, we gathered up three of the most fun, unusual races we could find to help you get your move-on.

(*Note: For realsies though, good luck to all the Tough Mudder-ers. You're a bunch of crazy assholes.)
