Pinkberry, we don't want 'cha anyway

Ahh, another New York Times article about the trendy frozen yogurt battles being waged in Greenwich Village, where Pinkberry and Red Mango face-off like dairy-based Jets and Sharks.

So should we expect this sort of thing coming soon to Hennepin Avenue? Not according to Pinkberry’s website, which states that store franchises are available to residents of certain states--and Minnesota’s not one of them.

Not that we’d want the overhyped fro-yo, anyway. I recently stopped in at the Pinkberry and Red Mango shops on Bleeker Street shops was, frankly, underwhelmed. Both versions tasted like the same TCBY we’ve been eating since the 80s. Pinkberry’s is a little creamier and tangier, but otherwise, it seems the only draw is for dieters using Pinkberry to satisfy ice cream cravings. With so many great local scoop shops (Crema Cafe, Izzy’s, Grand Ole Creamery, Sebastian Joe’s, etc.), if you can spare the calories, stick with the real thing.

Amen. I'm naturally suspicious of any place that attracts both the hordes and the droves--it's just Jonestown kool-aid of another sort. Everyone knows that waiting in line is only acceptable at the DMV or at Wal-mart at 2am on Black Friday. And everyone knows that ice cream is the more flavorful, not to mention the more nostalgic of the two. Eating frozen yogurt will never bring me back to the good old days of my childhood or conjure up any memory of fun and excitement.

You are all crazy. Ever think that perhaps an underdeveloped Minnesota pallet might not be able to distain the difference between a high level product and 80s TCBY.
Just a thought! New froyo is rules!

Yeah, but Pinkberry is frikkin delicious. On a recent trip to L.A., I had my first cracked-out Pinkberry experience and man---that $#!7 is tasty.

The communists have been putting flouride in yogurt for years!

Thank God someone is writing telling the truth.
Pinkberry and Red Mango are both disgusting. I live around the block from this Bleecker street face-off. Take a bunch of chemicals and synthetics, freeze 'em, squirt 'em out a soft serve machine and call 'em "yogurt." (Actually, are they even legally allowed to call it that?) It's sad that we have to keep inventing these fake "foods" to satisfy our desire to constantly have something in our gaping mouths. Why can't we just be satisfied with real ice cream, filled with ingredients we can pronounce ... in moderation?

Are you kidding? red mango is the best tasting frozen yogurt ever!!!

Posted by: ANN at February 28, 2008 4:49 PM

It takes like baking soda mixed with crushed ice.

$7 for Pinkberry? If by chance you can ever make it to Cuba, you can get an ice cream cone there for the equivalent of 3 cents, and it's the greatest ice cream you'll ever taste.

Yes, Ann, you keep eating your "red mango". But don't come crying when a man in a black trench coat and black fedora with the last name of Petrov comes to your door with orders from the Kremlin!

underdeveloped Minnesota PALETE? please, we had sebastian joe's before ben and jerry even twisted one up. i wonder why there is no TCBY anymore?? fro yo is a barely acceptable substitute for the real.

I'm actually considering opening up my own yogurt shop in the upcoming months that is similar to Red Mango. A healthy and good alternative to ice cream and another option. Don't think Mpls is ready for that?

Let's find out! Please let me know when your shop opens and I'll make a visit. I'm willing to give fro-yo another shot--as long as I don't have to wait in a line that goes up the block and around the corner. http://www.latimes.com/features/lifestyle/la-et-pinkberryaug04,1,7740582.story
