Barrio opens tonight
The guys behind La Belle Vie, Solera, and Smalley's Caribbean BBQ have partnered with local real-estate developers Tim Rooney and Ryan Burnet to open a new eatery on Nicollet Mall.
Barrio is first and foremost a tequila bar--they'll be pouring 100-some tequilas and mescals and mixing them in cocktails created by bartender Johnny Michaels, such as “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly,” made from tequila and tamarind cinnamon cola.
Bill Fairbanks, who has cooked at Solera and La Belle Vie, is exective chef, serving up a menu drawing its inspiration from all over Latin America: crab empanadas with salsa verde and avocado, potato sopes with goat cheese and red-chile tomatillo salsa, diver scallop ceviche, and fried mahi mahi tacos.
The space should hardly be recognizable as the former Dunn Bros. coffee shop, as Shea, the ubiquitous Twin Cities restaurant design team, added some cheeky elements to the décor: Mexican marionettes, a bull's head, retro pin-ups, etc.
If you're curious, Barrio opens at 5 p.m. tonight.
