Are diners getting snottier?

A reader writes: I am a server in two local fine dining establishments. There used to be a time when waiting tables was a fun and profitable way to make a living.

But recently, I've noticed a change in the behavior of patrons. They're in such a hurry, disgruntled and just plain nasty. When did we become a society that thinks it's such a tragedy that our steak came out medium instead of medium rare? We are very fortunate that we are afforded the luxury of being able to have a $40.00 steak or an $80.00 lobster.
Thousands of lives lost in a pointless war, $4.00 for a gallon of gas, global warming that will eventually wipe out all life forms, that's tragic. It's just food, get over it.

I can't say that I've personally noticed any uptick in rude behavior among my fellow diners when I've been eating out lately, but I'm wondering if others would agree?
